Does anyone out there have any good or bad experiences with ignition replacements?
I like the Jacobs "total" packages except for the price (+/-$400). They claim 12+ HP increases - pretty good.
MSD recomends the MSD 6T for the 5.9L and super conducter wires (Part #32979). They do not advertise a specific HP increase.
I have read about the Crane Fireball (3 times the current!!)
I like the Taylor wires (great color combos).
So many choices...
Any recomendations???

I have an Accel coil and connector on my coffee table to be installed tomorrow with their cap & rotor en route. But a few months ago I replaced the stock plug wires with Superconductors (MSD) and saw over a mpg increase; I recommend them. Didn't notice any power increase, but it idles better. Granted, it had almost 50,000 miles on it so it may have needed them anyway, but I never broke 20mpg before, and I'm averaging 15.9 mpg in the summer with Dallas' crappy reformulated fuel where I used to average 14.6. City driving, spirited. If anyone needs the Accel part #'s for a 3.9 just lemme know. I have a Jacobs ignition, and I bought it used off eBay for $200. I know there are lots of discount warehouse places that sell Jacobs ignitions for $200-$300, depending on the model you want. If you buy straight from the manufacturer, you wont get a good price. (They cannot undercut their retailers.)
I would go to an offroad or performance magazine and thumb through there to find these places. I have seen advertised prices of $219 before.
I do not have experience with Accel, Mallory, Crane, or MSD. Ignitions work great and all my vehicles will have one.

I posted on my site this morning that I installed my Accel coil without any improvement, but now I think the PCM is just not fully adjusted to the larger spark. After a bit more driving (like, an hour or two just cruising the highway on a whim), it now shows improvement over stock. I typically feather 1st gear (5-speed) and then floor it through 2nd when I want to play. It'll really s*** and get in that gear! Well this time I ran it up to redline, and it was a truly beautiful thing past my previous power band (you know how it works - 175 hp but 225 lb ft of torque - the horsepower is ignored and shifting occurs to bring on more torque!); I hit 3500 and it ran like it wanted to catch someone up to redline; third hit very hard and produced a nice, toothy grin. Still, it's not a K&N intake.
Catch is, you cannot you feel it in the torque band - definitely a hp only improvement. Worth it? I say "yes". Just for those main street drag races! Where's a kid in an Integra GS-R when you need one? :-) Can't wait to run it down in Ennis at the 1/4 mile to see if it counteracts the crumby reformulated gas down here in the summer to maintain my previous times. Hope the cap & rotor help even more...

Look into Magnacore wires. They are the best wires that you can put on your car or truck. They do not advertise much because they do not need to. More races have been won with Magnacore wires than any other. Try them if you do not like them they will be happy to give you your money back. They are not about gimicks just the best made wires from the best material. I have good results from Mallorys coils. I do not know which model it is but the last one I bought for my 4Runner is about the same size as the accel super coil. It is a great coil. You might want to try the new DENSO Iridium plugs. They require less voltage and current to fire that means more of your coils output can be used to increase the size of the flame krennel.

Sounds good, Sandman. I already have a new coil, but when the time comes to replace it the Mallorys will be on my list to check out. A buddy of mine likes to tease me that my new coil gives 45K volts, and his does 50K. The SuperConductor wires from MSD have already yielded exceptional results, but I'll give the Magnecores a try in about 50K miles (3 years?) Thanks for the ideas! Right now, my top priority is to replace my Splitfires with AutoLites with a more aggressive gap, only because they have been said to help in avoiding pinging.
Y'know, I've heard that a major misconception about Splitfires and those Bosch 4-post plugs with four tips is that electicity is lazy; only one of those gaps will be used - whichever is the shortest path to the electrode. What this tells me is that Splitfires will never misfire, but what were the odds of this to begin with? I say get a higher quality plug and go with it! And that's why I won't bother with Splitfires again. It all makes sense to me; past knowledge tells the least resistance path is true. But that's just me, and not necessarily the view of my multiple personalities. :-) -tk
