Subject: How To Stop Truck Bounce. Dips & Bumps IP: Logged
Message: My I got to tell ya i Love my `05 Dakota but what is up with it's On Road Suspension?
I've been thru the Off Road Section but i couldnt find anything that related to my issues.
There are Several Dips in the Roads around where I live and when I hit these Dips doing 45+mph the Truck Bounces almost like when your in a Vehicle that has Bad Shocks.
Another thing it has a Problem with is Speed Bumps.
When I go over a Speed Bump at like 3-10mph It bounces like Crazy. The Truck will rock like 4-5 times before smoothing out and I hate that.
I'm thinking that i need Better Shocks other then these Sucky Stock Shocks.
The `05 Dakotas now have a standard Higher, Heavy Duty Suspension vs. the `04 and Below Dakota's. The 2wd Trucks now Sit just as high as the 4wd Trucks could this be the problem?
Please,... Does Anyone have Any Suggestions to Prevent Truck Bounce and if the Problem is the Stock Shocks which MFG Shock should i replace them with? I've been in Trucks that could Drive Over a Parking Stopper in a Parking Lot and Hardly Even Feel It inside the Cab.
So please let me know what your suggestions are.
Thank you in advanced.

Message: I'm sure there's other things such as shocks and anti-sway bars that might help, but did you check your tire pressure? Mine hops like mad when the tires are even slightly overinflated. I should add - for hauling heavy loads I inflate to where I need to be, then when I drive w/ a normal load is where I get the hop. That reminds me to deflate back to normal, which is 36psi for 31x10.5 15's. Hope this helps.

Message: Replace those crappy OEM shocks. I put Monroe Reflex shocks on my 03 QC and there's a world of difference in the way the truck drives. I've heard the Edelbrock AIS shocks are good also.

Message: I thought the '05 4x4 Dakota sits lower than the previous models???? I know my '00 QC sits a lot higher than the '05 QC at the local dealership.
In any case, I agree, change the shocks. My truck did that when new along with the rear kciking out to the side over wash board surfaces, almost casuing me to lose control a time or two. I installed Edelbrock IAS shocks and that took care of the rear hop along with the nose bounce. It also made it more stable when towing a heavy trailer. One thing to take in to account is the front suspension on the '05 4x4 Dakota is coil spring as opposed to torsion bars on the '04 and earlier models. If the bouce is really bad you may want to consider stiffer springs.

Message: Give a thought to Roadmaster Active Suspension. I installed it on my '00 QC primarily to assist against drop of the rear end when I tow (to help the EZLift bars,&tc.). It helped reduce the bouncie as well as flatten while cornering.
Basicaly, the devices reduce the ability of the rear springs from dearching. Unloaded the ride is not effected. I bought them from Summitt for $160. Money well spent. With +/- 500# on the tongue, the back end droped only 1-3/4".

Message: Okay,... Before i go ahead and order the Edelbrock Performer IAS Shocks With the Patented Inertia Active System I just wanted to let you guys know that My `05 Dakota is NOT a 4WD Truck. Mine is 2WD. Does this make a Difference?
It looks like it's going to run me about $70 a shock. The cheapest so far is from http://www.accessconnect.com/edelbroc.htm
And i see another Problem. The shocks only go up to the `03 Dakota's Damn,...
Anyone got a link to a Website that lists the Edelbrock Performer IAS Shocks for the `05 Dakota's?
Hmm,.. I'm trying to think of a place in town that might sell these as well.
Damn,... i can see them in my head but i can't put a name to them, i see them on TV all the time,... Hmm was it Midas?
Well anyway,... Post a Link if you have one for the `05's Please.
Thank you.
P.S. I agree with "Figols". I know what you mean about the rear kick out over those surfaces and i can easily see losing control... Like i was saying theres a few Dips in the Roads around here and doing 50MPH or so really makes the front bounce plus theres a small curve right after the dip.
Okay guys thanks again.

Message: Well,...
I just got off the phone with Edelbrock and Max the rep who answered the phone says that they Do Not have any shocks for the `05 Dakota's. He said that theres a listing for the `05 Ram 1500 but that was it. He also said that there wasnt a listing for the `04's either.
So as it looks like,... I'll be waiting a couple/few years before i can get these shocks.
This sucks,...
There isnt CRAP out there for the `05 Dakota's.
WTF.
Oh Well.
Catch ya later.

Message: 2wd - 4wd, it doesn't make a difference, the OEM shocks leave a large area for improvement.
I don't know how much better the Edelbrock's are than the Reflex's if anything at all, they both use some type of patented inertia valving. All 4 Reflex's were $160 from rockauto.com. Monroe has a $20 rebate on the shocks, but I think it ended or is ending very soon.
Only $140 for all 4 shocks,,,,,,hmmmmmmm

Message: I've got stock everything.
My truck was kind of spungy when it was stock, to where it botomed out when i would off road. I DID drive it kind of hard for a spell.
Anyway. I lifted it SIGHTLy with some small blocks in the rear, and a torsion bar crank up front.
I tell you. instead of RUININGmy ride, I made it SO much better!
The stiffer torsion bars keeps it from DIPPING harshly on dips. It isn't TOO stiff either. JUST RIGHT!
I can haul A$$ over most speed bumps now :)
Not sure what is diff about a 2005 though.

Message: I could have sworn the 05 uses struts instead of shocks. But I didn't look really close at it so maybe not, though the front suspension is very different from 04 and down.

Message: They're not struts.
They're coil-over shocks.
And yes, there is a difference.
