my 98 3.9L has this problem.... it has for a while actually. when i put it in neutral and rev it up to about 3k then let off, it sits there for like, 10 seconds, then really really slowly backs off. It doesnt do it in park though. I just replaced the IAC sensor, but it still does it... any ideas??? BTW, if it helps, i have the MSD ignition, MSD 8.5mm spark plug wires, and IAT adjuster, as well as pretty much all the other basic little mods...

well join the club, this problem seems to occur more often with the manual trans ones though. I am waiting to buy a vaccuum guage but my vehicle was recently in for a vaccuum hose leaking and making noise (before I bought it) and that still didn't fix the problem. Please post if you find out the cause.

I've had slow return to idle since new as well. In my case, when you shift into neutral as you brake to a stop, the RPM's stay up around 1200 until I come to a complete stop. Then they drop to idle (about 800 rpm). This is another problem I've mentioned each of the 4 times I've had it to the dealer for balky tranny problems. Neither problem was ever resolved.

It seems like the RPM's drop more slowly the sooner I get into neutral. Like if I see the light way back while I'm still doing 30 or so and go ahead and shift into neutral, the RPM's seem to stay up around 1400-1500 until I come to a complete stop. If there's traffic and I get into neutral at a lower speed, the rpm's only stay up around 1000-1200.

well I just bought a vaccuum gauge and the problem that I am experiencing is NOT vaccuum related, just thought I'd give the heads up in case anyone else was wondering about that.

My RPM's actually go UP for a second when I throw it into neutral or press the clutch while driving. It's real distracting because I have to wait for the engine to settle down before releasing the clutch into the next gear.

might be a plenum gasket gone. you smell oil burning? could be somethin along those lines.

well it doesn't smell or look like it's burning oil but when my father owned it last year and I was changing the oil, it was 1-2 quarts low, but I've got no idea how many miles he went on it. I changed the oil 1500 miles ago and it's still full. I thought I'd be able to detect a belly pan gasket leak with my vaccuum guage, but that checked out fine. I'm going to emissions inspection soon, if my belly pan gasket is leaking and I'm burning oil, shouldn't my HydroCarbons be high?
