Subject: Brake/cruise problem DIFFERENT!! HELP! IP: Logged
Message: I have what I think is a different brake problem than any mentioned here. I've combed the search engine to no avail.
Here's the problem. One day, went out and started the truck. Parking brake light came on, just as if the parking brake was on, but it isn't. Won't go off, stays on ALL the time (when key is on of course).
In addition, at the EXACT SAME TIME, the cruise control stopped working.
So, there you go. Parking brake light on. NO ABS light...and cruise control doesn't work. Seemingly all connected.
Anybody have any ideas??? I've tried everything.

Message: Nope. Already taken it out, cleaned, tested, and re-installed it. Working perfectly. Tested it in and out of the vehicle.
In fact, if you remove it, it should never detect the p-brake being on. It shorts a wire to ground when the pedal is depressed. If the switch it out, no way it can be connected to ground.

Message: More than likely I'm wrong but I thought I read
a thread somewhere that the "Brake" light serves
two warnings. One, the EMG brake is inguaged and
two, there is a problem with your brake system.
The problem has nothing to do with your ABS
system.
Maybe a code is also stored?
Good luck on your find.. Please let us know what
you find out.

Message: I forgot to say anything about why the cruise
isn't working either. Maybe, just maybe it gets
disabled IF there indeed is a brake problem.
Think about it.. If the EMG brake was really
inguaged and brake light *ON*, that logic input
to the systems computer would keep you from going
into cruise. Maybe also holds true if brake light
*ON* for a real brake problem.
You never know how those computer geeks programmed
those systems anymore.
Again, good luck...

Message: That was my thought as well. I kinda figured that the cruise control problem was just an anamoly related to the computer thinking the ebrake was on.
My first thought was the switch was bad, making the computer think the ebrake was on, and consequently disabling the cruise control (as a failsafe/reminder sort of thing).
However, this doesn't seem to be the case. Most of the posts I have read relate to BOTH brake lights being on, but my ABS light is NOT on, just the e/parking brake light.
Maybe somebody with a working ebrake and cruise control could test this hypothesis for me?
Also, can anybody other than the dealership read any stored codes it may have?

Message: i think this indicates a short in the wiring for the ebrake switch somewhere. and nno the cruise will not engage. think about it, when you hit the brakes the cruise disengages. also check the switch pedal itself and make sure it's working properly.

Message: Both the brake switch and the parking brake switch are working correctly.
Chased down the entire parking brake wire, nothing wrong with it.
Plenty of fluid.
I'm at a complete and total loss here.

Message: Ok, get this. Today, I get in the truck, AND IT'S WORKING!!! That's right, no light, cruise works just fine.
What did I do? I left the battery unplugged for about 3 hours while I installed a trailer brake controller. I had done this before, but only for 5 minutes or so to see if I could get a code to clear.
The only thing I can surmise is that maybe, somehow, the PCM got hung up in some loop or something? I took it to the dealership, it didn't have any stored codes.
I'm at a loss here. While I'm happy that it's working, my luck says that it's going to happen again. And I STILL won't know why. Man this bugs the crap out of me.
