Subject: 360 crate motor options? IP: Logged
Message: I was on the phone with Dodge today asking about my options for a 360c.i. motor for my R/T. I didn't realize I had so many options. I have the stock 250hp, 300hp, 380, and 395 packages. The 380hp only cost $3200 my cost.
Not bad...

Message: hey man be careful with the mopar crate motors, i hate to bash mopar since im a die hard man, but ive seen several crate motors not live up to their advertised horsepower. the way they make them, is chrysler makes the castings, then they contract joe-blow from the machine shop down the road to prep and assemble the motors. another friend has had 4 sets of performance heads turn out wrong, i think it was bad valve geometry. the rep came out, told him to keep the best set of heads, and gave him his money back. i dont mean to ruin anyones day, but just make sure everything is good before installation.

Message: Most of the crate motors are also carbuerated, and thus will not work with your stock fuel injection setup. You can make them work, but it is significantly more work to do so.
Personally I would build up your existing 360 unless it has really high mileage or some other problem that would prevent it. Get a better cam, R/T heads, performance roller/rockers, PCM, cold air intake, headers, cat-back, M1 intake and a 52mm TB.

Message: The motors are set up for a 4-barrel carb. By the looks of the motor, the only modifcation would be a switch of intakes to the TB.
I can't believe a multi-billion dollar company would have "Joe blow" machine the heads. Mopar doesn't have a performance machine shop? The race don't they?

Message: I know it sounds pretty screwed up since they contract a seprate machine shop to assemble the motors, but it is true. That is what the chrysler rep said whenhe checked out my friends heads. Even gm people have had problems with theirs too,(big suprise) I know someone who had a crate gm with no rod bearings installed! now thats pretty bad. he's lucky he checked the motor internals out before installation. I realize others can be even more powerful than advertized, but the bottom line is double check anything big before installing because i dont think their warranties are not that good either.

Message: as for the 380/360... i havent seen one dyno below 400 hp. I dont know about the others, though.
it would take a lot more than just switching the intake manifold. The cams used in those motors are not EFI friendly.

Message: I have a buddy from school who put a 380 crate in his 94 or newer Ram, he was in a wreck shortly after getting it installed, so get it running was all he's been able to do, if he gets it back before end of the month, he'll be taking it to Ennis, TX(Texas Motorplex) for a street night on 7-30-04 to see what it runs when I take my R/T and another buddy takes his lightning.
I can find out what all he had to do to get it to work, and if its EFI or carb.

Message: Not sure how mechanically inclined you are but I would try the head gaskets. Leaking exhaust could be pressurizing the inside of the block and popping out the freeze plug. The burning oil could be the wrong rings were used so do a compression test on the cylinders and once dry and once with a squirt of oil and compare. With the heads off inspect them for cracks in between the valves and also check your plenum gasket as this will explain the oil loss.
