Message: OK, Kev, I'll ask the 64 dollar question.
Of all the national brands of "dino" oil, which is the best. I want to be able to go to the auto store and buy a reasonably good oil for my cars. How do you feel about Pennzoil, Quaker State, Valvoline, Mobil, Castrol etc. all the major players.
I believe if you use "dino" oil and change it regularly, you're providing plenty of protection for your car. Am I correct?
I'm here to learn, not spout, so fill us in.
And, thanks a lot for offering your expertise, we sure could use it.

Message: IF you insist on Dino oil then I wold go with one of three. Havolin Formula III, Rotela, and Cem-peco. I do not use Dino oil any more unless I develop a leak and am buying time until I fix it. Can not see leaking expensive oil all over the ground!! I am slowly switching over to Amsoil as I deminish my Mobil 1 supply.

Message: Yah you can not go wrong with Castrol GTX either. It was one my preferred oils before I switched to synthetic. My Dad only used Castrol GTX 20W50 Summer, 10W30 Winter. We never had an oil related engine problem and we always keep vechiles for a long time or we put a ton of miles(200,000) on them quick and get another one. I switched my Dad over to synthetics around 2000.

Message: Dr. D I can answere that even though I am useing synthetic oil. Matter of fact I am useing alot of Amsoil products right now. "If I was going to own a vechile for 3-5 year then trade it in I would not go with the added expense of synthetic oil. I would get the cheapest oil I could find and change it every 5000 miles. If it was a leased vechile I would use the cheapest oil I could find and change it every 9000 miles or 3 mounths. I put 3000 miles a mounth just driveing to and from work." Because I tend to own vechiles for 10 years or more and family memeber often buy vechiles from one another I look at things differently and try to put the best I can in my cars and trucks. The above half of this post was me playing the role of a non-synthetic person and is highlighted by ("") not to be confused with a quotation.

Message: Sandman,
I extend my oil drains well beyond the normal 3,000 mile oil change interval. I drive every truck that I own until the wheels fall off and I have a 95' 4X2 Dakota with a 3.9L, auto/air etc. that will get 24 m.p.g using synthetics from bumper to bumper. This same truck would only get 20 m.p.g. on petroleum.
Synthetics are cheaper to use than Petroleum oil if you do not have an excesive oil consumption problem.

Message: Dr. D you are preaching to the choir. I was playing devils advocate. You can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink. With alot of American leaseing their vechiles it is very hard to sell expensive oil to them. If they are dead set on not useing synthetics you might as well help them select a decent refined crude product. I can honestly say that I would not use synthetic oil if I was leaseing or if I planed on tradeing it at 36 months. As a tech I used to see this alot once the whole lease thing caught on. If something broke on a leased vechile the customer would replace it with the cheapest part they could find.

Message: You can switch back and forth as many times as you like with no negative results. Petroleum and syntetic oils are completely compatible with each other.
Note: It is always advisable "not" to mix the oils. I know some truck owners who (to save $)think they can add "one" quart of Synthetic Oil, and get the full benefits. This is not true. But, you can switch back and forth with no negative results.

Message: The first time I ran across synthetic oil was years ago in Turbo Jet and Turbo Fan aircraft engins. The synthetic oils used in the two 33000 pounds of thurst, Pratt & Whitney, J58 turbo jet engines that are attached to the SR71 Black Bird was either AeroShell Synthetic (Shell Oil) or Mobil synthetic. Routine oil samples(called a JOAP)are submitted for a spectrum analysis to look at the pecentage of contamination in the oil which is used to determine the engine wear. i.e. so much % of nickel, copper, chromium ect. that comes from the engine's bearings and bushings. Both oils did very well in these extreme engines. These engines run continuously in full after burner that drive the SR71 at cruse speeds that is faster then a 30-06 rifle bullet (Mach 3+). Both of these oils were full synthetic but it was forbidden to mix the two brands together. The reason is because each brand have their own little recipe for the additive that is mixed with base to meet a required Mil Spec (military specification) on performance. This is simular to the SAE standards. The reaction of the additives contained in the oil of one brand when mixed with the additives contained in the oil of the other could result in substandard performance. Synthetic engine oils have been used for years in jet engines but not that long in piston engines. Out of all the brand names of synthetic oils that have been mentioned at this site, I have to point to Mobil One. Mobil has a lot of experience. I'm not for sure but the other brands mentioned does not make a syn oil that is certified by the FAA or the Military to be used in jet engines. I've heard and read some outstanding things about Red Line Oil. Air Race pilot John Sharp who owns and flys a #1 piston driven race airplane called the "NEMESIS" is or was sponsored by Red Line. I don't know if he uses it as an engine oil. For organic oil I've always had good luck with Castro GTX.

Message: Joe,
I don't want to be rude, but it would probably be best to run a "search" and read some "oil filter", or "oil filtration" posts. Asking a "generic" question" such as , "What about Oil Filters?", will lead to an additional 20-30 posts on this thread ... a lot of it being repeats that can be found elsewhere.
That being said, here is one good thread (others exist):

Why is Rosie angry? Why is Lab Rat angry? Hhmmmmm

Message: There is an e-book that you can get called the motor oil bible: www.motor-oil-bible.com. It tells you everything you would ever want to know about oil. It's not free, but it only costs about $9.00. There is a comparison chart that comes with it that will show you how different brand oils stand up to each other in such categories as:high temp performance, low temp performance, abilty to hold contaminants, ability to hold it's viscosity rating, and many more. Granted the guy who wrote it is an Amsoil dealer, but the numbers don't lie. Synthetics outperformed dino oil in every test. I personally don't agree with the argument that if you aren't going to keep the vehicle for an extended period that you should use dino oil because it doesn't cost you any more to use synthetic than it does dino. Especially when using an extended drain oil like Amsoil. I can change my oil once a year (about every 15,000 miles, they say you can go up to 25,000 miles), and the filter every 6 mos and it doesn't cost me any more than changing regular oil every 4,000 miles, which is what I did before the switch. I get better gas mileage (which is important with the gas-sucking 318 in my Dak), and I don't have to worry about the oil breaking down in extremes of heat & cold. If you live in the mid-west, you know we get both. As far as filters go. You get what you pay for. Buy a premium one - Period.
Anyway, if you get the e-book listed at the beginning of this, you can look at the numbers and decide for yourself. I hope this helps. Oh, to open up a new can of worms, change your transmission and diff fluid to synthetic also.

Message: I've been using the 'SuperTech' (FAKE)synthetic oil (10w-30) in a couple of my older cars, and it seems to be OK, but I haven't done an analysis so I don't really know. For $2.97 a quart, I'm hopin' that its at least a little better than dino. It's sure cheap enough. When Wal-Mart has the 5-quart Mobil 1 jugs (I kinda' like 'jugs', you know what I mean?)for $17.97, I'll buy a few of those. They don't seem to have them all the time though. I wish I could afford to switch to Amsoil (sorry Steven - Amsoil Sponsor) but I'm afraid I'm gonna loose my job in January and gotta hold onto my ca$h.

Message: As a reply to "steve" who posted on 12/06 here is your information regarding O'Reilly's Oil. Sorry for the delay - I did not have a lot of information readily available. The actual manufacturer is Coastal - made for O'Reilly's. Coastal is out of West Memphis, Ark. BTW, they do make an excellent Marine Grease at a good price. I don't know anything about the quality of their oils, and have never reviewed their spec. sheets.

Message: I work at 7T Express Lube in Russellville, AR. I see alot of cars coming in and out, most of which are regular customers. One that sticks in my mind is a guy with a newer model jeep with almost 300,000 miles on it. He is in for an oil change almost every other weekend. And yes, he has reached his 3000 miles or he is a little over. He does not pussyfoot it either. He has been using Quaker State 4x4, which is a synthetic blend, for the entire life of the vehicle. Also, we change the oil on a fleet of engineering trucks who use Mobil 1. They insist on us writing the miles on their sticker for 15,000 miles instead of 3000. They all drive new body-style chevrolet pickups(its a wonder they run anyways, lol) but never seem to have any problems out of them. I use Mobil 1 myself in my 98 dodge ram. I have 80,000 miles on it and it runs great and has no leaks either. I know I dont have a dakota, but there isnt any other place I can find on the net that has so many discussions that are helpful to us mopar owners as this site. If anyone knows of a good Ram site with plenty of forums and performance tips, please dont hesitate to tell me about it!
