Message: No one said a 300,000 mile honda didn't exist. We said there wasn't a 300,000 mile Honda with no major repairs, hence clutch, throw out bearing, water pump(s), altenator(s), cv-joint(s), front wheel bearings, engine seals, AC compressors, fuel systems repair/replace(carb/fuelinjection), STRUTS, rack and pinions, fuel pumps, and a host of small repairs. Several people on this forum have owned or has familly members that have owned Hondas and they are not that reliable. The reason you don't see as many 10 years old Hondas as you do other domestic makes is because they are too expensive to replace parts on. It gets to the point where it is cheaper to buy a new one and make monthly payments instead of trying to keep a 10 year old one with 200,000 plus miles on it running. It's a NO BRAINER!

Message: Well I kind of agree with you Wiplash, clutch, water pump and CV joint replacement would be considered a major repair if they failed, but these components didn't fail. The clutch was replaced as a preventative measure since it was out during the engine and tranny seal replacement, the water pumps were replaced since this is part of replacing the timing belt and the CV joints never failed, just the boots. The Only "hard part" that failed were the bearings in the distributor. Parts that lasted 330K; AC compressor and system, engine, tranny, alternator, starter, radiator, fans, exhaust system, fuel system, electrical and electronics, suspension, etc.
It was a "No Brainer" keeping this car since it was very reliable and easy to repair. Heck, in 10 years and 300,000 miles I was never stranded, just a flat tire once. I do admit it's nice having a newer vehicle, but the repairs are still there. I had fewer repairs on Honda the last few years than my 00 Dak. Let's see, I have owned the Dak for 2 years and have replaced the upper and lower ball joints, outer tie rods, wheel bearings, rotors and pads twice, driveshaft, shocks and the inner tie rods now need to be replaced. All this on top of the truck payment, certainly the Honda would have been cheaper. Iam not saying I don't like the Dak, I just think the Honda was more reliable and cheaper to operate.
The reason you don't see many 10 year old vehicles around is everyone and thier mother bought newer vehicles when the interest rates were at 0%. The only older American cars you see running around are the ones with some character or a big azz engine. How many Dodge Omni's or K Cars, Chevy Chevette's or Citation's , Ford Fiesta's or Pinto's do you see driving around? You don't see them for the same reason you don't see the older foreign cars, who wants to be seen in a 15 year old chit box. You'll see 15 year old trucks and sports cars, but the foreign manufacturers weren't into these markets heavily back 15 years ago.
I guess it grinds on my ass when I can't buy and American vehicle as reliable as a foreign vehicle and/or the American companies won't stand behind their product, Chevy piston slap, Dodge ball joints, Honda automatic transmissions,,,, Oh wait Honda extended the warranties for the defective transmissions to 7 years or 100,000 miles.

Message: I've tried many times to save money by driving an older vehicle and failed misserably every time.
I know all about the cost maintaining a Jap car..... $500.00 altenators, $150.00 pistons, $800.00 clutches, $250.00 (rebuilt) CV joints ($350.00 new)..etc.. I've owned 3 Japs. None were Hondas, but they all cost about the same to replace parts on. I couldn't believe I had to pay $150.00 for one piston in a 1.5L Mitsu. I could have bought 8 pistons for a 350 Chevy for that price.
I'll gladly replace ball joints every 30K just so I never have to replace another strut, axle, front wheel bearing, rear main seal, and timing belt in a FWD POS.

Message: $150 Mitsu piston, could have bought the "whole" chevy 350 rebuild kit for $150. I don't know if I would have kept the Honda either if I was throwing $$$ at it like that. The most expensive thing I bought for the car was the distributor, think it was around $300, seals, CV boots, timing belts are all pretty cheap. I guess it comes down to economics, if it was going to cost $1000 to fix a $2000 vehicle the car would be going to the bone yard, but I would spend $1000 to fix a $10,000 vehicle. It just seems that the $10,000 vehicles can run up a $1000 bill pretty quick.
Can't beleive this, but I kind of agree with you again Wiplash. I would rather work on the easy suspension fixes for the Dak, than electrical, engine, tranny or more serious problems found with other vehicles.

Message: I think people probably drive their Dalota's HARDER than people drive their sh!tboxes. For instalnce when I had a Honda and other small sh!t box cars I crawled into the entrance/exit ramps from the street into shopping centers, over dips, etc.
I don't slow down at all in my 4X4 Dak. I'm sure this will cost me the ball joints at 15k Miles. But you can't say you drive a sh!tbox import like that because you can't or it would eat sh!t on the entrance ramp.
Alltho a CV joint in any car lasting 300k is short of amazing.
Oh yeah. There are 1980's Horizon/Omni's running around here in Pheonix. I wouldn't be caught dead in one, but they are around. Also THOUSANDS of 1960's MUSTANGS and even sh!tloads of 80's MUSTANGS and the likes. I finally saw a older Honda today. It looked like a late 80's Prelude. Must have been garaged and seldom driven or something because it wasn't re incarnated back to it's beer can self yet!

Message: Well I don't know about driving the Dak's harder, certainly the Dak's can handle the bumps and dips better and therefore people drive them harder in this respect. But, the Honda I owned was almost underpowered so I was always at the red line getting the car up to speed and passing other cars. I also had the thing loaded down with a bunch of crap for work, nothing like hauling around an extra 500# of stuff in an econo-box. In this respect I was realy beating the piss out of the car.
The Dak doesn't even breathe hard hauling my work stuff, getting up to speed or passing. The 3000# boat does put a drag on the Dak, but the Honda would have had a hissy fit trying to even move the boat.
It's like trying to compare apples to oranges with the Dak and an econo-box. Sure the Dak has POWER, can handle some rough terrain and tow like a motha, but the Honda I had would put a Dak to shame in the corners and would get 40 MPG, kind of miss the 40 MPG with $2/gal gas. The thing would fly through squirrely corners at 80 without even thinking about body roll, now I have to slow down going through some twisty sections with the Dak. It's all about what you expect from the vehicle, certainly wouldn't look to tow with the Honda, but then again I wouldn't think about getting great gas mileage with the Dak.

Message: Well, that's been my point since the begining of this conversation. I drive everything hard. I have a list of cars I've spent money on a mile long. The two that held up the best as far as having to maintain/money were a 1966 D100 with a slant 6 and a 1976 Chevy Impala. I drove the hell out of that slant 6. You couldn't blow that thing up. The impala was better taken care of, but I still ran the sh!t out of it. It had 80,000 miles on it when I bought it for $1,500.00 in 1985 and I sold it for $1,200.00 in 1990 with 185,000 miles on it. The only thing I repalced on that car was the drag link, outer tie rods, U-joints, front pinion bearing/seal, brake rotors, radiator, and pads. The radiator cost like $150.00 and that was the most expensive thing I put on the car. So, I drove 100,000 miles on a 10-15 year old car and sold it for almost what I paid for it. My total out of pocket cash for that car was less than $1,000.00.
That's why I have another one. It's a 1993 Caprice Classic. It is cherry and it has 77K on the clock. I paid $4,000.00 cash for it 1 year ago with 67,000 on the clock. So far, I've had to replace the radiator.....history repeats itself.

Message: I like Jap products for what they are good for and that is to get you from point a to point b. I don't like paying for them and I damn sure don't like replacing parts on them. You have to keep one 10 years in order to get back the money you paid up front for them. A Base Neon is about $4,000.00 cheaper than a Base Civic. For the price of the Civic Si with all the options you can get an SRT-4. No matter how you want to justify it, no Honda or Toyota is American. All the profits go to Japan. If they weren't here there would be Dodge, Ford, and Chevy plants in their place employing the same people and our economy would be better because more of our money would be staying here.

Message: Fu#k Toyota. Toyota's take it in the butt. Seriously. In about 1986 or so I was driving my moms boat of a 1970 Ford Wagon. It was clean at the time and when you're just at the driving age you'll drive anything. It was pearl white with chrome and drug dealer tinted windows. It was cool to party in.
Anyway some idiot kids in their brand new Toyota truck that daddy bought them had changed their minds about going straight in the middle of an intersection and stopped suddenly to turn. I was too close and too fast (my fault there) and we bumped into them. I didn't even FEEL the impact. But they pulled over and so did we.
The entire back end of their Toyota was caved in! The tail gate SMASHED! Bumper SMASHED!
On the Ford wagon you had to look real close to see a little tiny dent in the chrome on the front point of the hood!!!!!!!!! We couldn't figure it out how the hell all that damage happened to them and hardly a scratch on the Ford. I mean, the HOOD was stronger than the entire rear end of a Toyota??? YUP! IT was!!!

You could back into concrete and knock chips off and not hurt it. You bump a modern bumper and it cost you a $1000 in damage. Is there something wrong with this picture?

The next time you close the door or the tail gate make sure your sober........
If you don't like it go trade it in on a POS toyota. Then see how much it takes to put a dent in the JAP CRAP. I can put a dent in a Honda with my middle finger.
