Subject: Westin push bar pull out IP: Logged
Message: I've got Westin Push bars with the brush gaurds to cover the lights on my 2000 QC 4X4, I haven't gotten into a situation where I've been stuck and needed to be pulled out, but when it does happen, do you think I could attach a strap to the push bars?? It's all pretty thick, tubes are about 3 inches dia, everything else is 1/4 inch steel, and is bolted directly to the frame in 4 places, and doesn't attach or touch anything up front that would come off easily.
Like I said, I haven't needed to use it yet, but don't want to be like "yeah, just hook on to the brush gaurd" then have it come flying off along with the front of my truck and have all my friends laugh at me!!
I know that tow hooks would be better, but didn't know if anyone else had any experiences with trying to use their brush gaurd!

Message: Don't forget with that brush guard there is alot of leverage I don't know if I'd try it on my truck. But... I'd have to asume if you could keep it close to the bolts to the frame you'd be ok. If you put it on the end you might bend your brush guard.
Maybe Blizzard could answer this question for sure.

Message: i say you just buy the tow hooks at truckperformance.com for 6.99 plus shipping and handling and you don't have to worry about messing up your guard

Message: Yeah, I don't think I'd try it either. I guess it would depend on just how stuck you were. Light stuff shouldn't be an issue.

Message: One of the reasons I asked was because I was reading another posting about how Chrysler doesn't sell hooks for Dakotas and you have to jump through some hoops to get them on...you'll have problems with the front facia if you don't have your truck lifted, you have to drill holes in the frame, etc..didn't know if there was an easier way around it!

Message: While we're on this topic, can somebody post a link on where to get the brackets, best place for hooks, and installation directions?
This would be a big help, I have the cutouts for them and it kinda looks ridicules without them

I'm still working on the webpage.. If you click on tow hooks you can get a picture of the blueprints for the bracket itself. You need to have 2 of those cut and By the time you get that I should have the rest of the information on that webpage :-)

Message: I had a roughneck brand bar on my 2000 ram (i know it wasnt a dakota and I am ssoooo sorry) anyhow it had very sturdy mounts which attached directly to the fram bith below and above/through the bumper. I used it to pull a buddies ram out of a creek with a rather steep bank he had gotten high centered on. Also used it to pull a minivan out of a ditch that it had slid off into and broken both right wheels. Between the two it only pulled out about an inch ( 1" ), and to correct it I nosed up to a LARGE sycamore tree and shoved it back in. I used grade 8 hardware and the factory mounting brackets with no problem. (I would consider both of these somewhat difficult pulls as niether of them where on rolling stock)
JUST MY .02
Just be sure it is mounted with strong enough hardware. You ability to utilize that brute force from that massive v8 will only go until the weakest point in the system gives be it, bumper, bar, bolt, or frame.

Message: That's cool, let's home the Westin bars are as strong as the roughneck!!
I'll probably try it at some point in time, but as suggested, try to hook up as close to where it bolts to the frame as possible!
I also saw a few instructions, etc for tow hooks in the members off road area
