Subject: '95 Dak axle swap & lift IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, I'm new here but I thought I should say hello and thanks. I've picked up a bunch of info from this board and I'm starting to collect the parts for my Dak project.
I've got a '95 Sport 4x4 V-8 5-speed that is stock except for heavy duty rear leafs and a 2" block lift.
I plan to swap in the 5.9l V-8 and NV4500 5-speed that I bought out of a wrecked Ram. I'm going to use a double transfer case for extra low range, and I'm swapping in axles from a '78 or '79 Bronco using the James Duff long travel suspension system and coil-over shocks.
I'm not sure yet how high I will lift it, but I need room to clear 35" tires with a bit of fender trimming. Bumpers will probably be custom made by shaggy from over at offroadexchange.
Let me know what you guys think.
Also, what do you know about truck-worthy engine mods for the 5.9? I don't need a race engine but I would like as much power as I can get (and still stay California legal)

Message: I've already got the plans to leave CA, but I have to wait about two years. :(
Good news is I can find a ton of no-rust parts while I'm still here and I have to admit that there is a wide variety of wheelin' terrain. Mud, sand, rocks, whatever, you can find some.
What I usually can't find is a Dakota off-road. It would be cool if I had a chance to look at somebody's project IRL. So far all I have is a collection of web sites.

Message: arthur, I'm in Santa Rosa, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. I don't often get to the central coast but I love it there. I used to spend time in that area when I was stationed in Monterey back in '89-'90.

Message: let me know how the engine swap goes... i have a '94 with the 318 and 175,000 miles on it that i plow with and tow a 28' fifth wheel trailer with. it still runs ok, but it doesn't have the power i'm sure it once did, so when it dies i'm thinking of doing a swap to the 5.9. do you know anyone else that's done it, or are you going blind?

Message: Blind as a bat. I've got the book from Mopar Performance but it's not as much help as I hoped for. I'll probably need to read the service manuals for both the Dakota and the Ram.
I know some service techs that should be good tutors if I can interest them in something so new.
