Message: Is there a way to tighten the torsion bars on a 2001 QC 4x4. I know on my old truck it gave a little extra clearance, but I did not notice anything to tighten on the Dak.

Message: Search ... archives .... torsion bars
I did the search and it returned 160 threads about torsion bars ... bout 70% of them have to do with cranking them to lift the front end.
You may have to weed out some GenII posts, but there is a TON of info in the archives on that subject. Please, search the archive, and if you still have questions post 'em!
Thanx

Message: don't tighten the torsion bars unless you want to start replacing upper ball joints every 15000 miles. i did it and mine are bad again. the upper ball joints cost about $150 each not including the alignment. its not something you want to replace all the time.

Message: I'm sorry you are having post-torsion-bar-cranking problems Steve. But I tightened mine about 25,000 miles ago and have had NO problems at all. They were done professionally and a 1" rear spacer was implanted on the rear axle to help level out the truck. The guy that tightened them told me the truck probably sits at a better and healthier angle now than it did previously.
I have no answer for what is happening with your truck's torsion bars, but I havent had any problems with them at all. And I have 31" A/T tires on there and a 2" body lift. Oh well, maybe I'm just lucking out?

Message: It depends on your vehicle. Cranking the torsion bars may or may not have a negative effect. If you crank them all the way it will most definatelly be a bad thing. But if you do it moderatly you shouldn't have any problem. I'd only use it to get about a inch out of my truck past that.. Lift that puppy.

Message:
I think you are referring to my 88 Dakota, which has a 4” suspension lift, 3” Body lift, and cranked torsion bars. The bars are the 2000 lbs V8 bars from a 91-96 Dakota and were purchased new at the dealer parts counter. I have them cranked up for 1-1/2 to 2” of additional height in the front with a set of add-a-leafs in the rear.
I believe you are mistaken for I have never stated that I don’t have issues, in fact, I frequently post that cranking the bars will reduce the service life of front end parts like ball joints, CV-boots, etc… I even have it in the how to crank the bars section of my webpage. The front-end parts are designed to work within a specific range of motion/stress for maximum durability/strength at the factory set height. Cranking the bars up, changes the range of motion/stress on those components causing them to wear quicker. The higher you crank it, the more strain on the parts. Since I originally cranked the torsion bars in my truck, I have replaced the ball joints twice (though once was in conjunction with the installation of the lift kit and new torsion bars). I have also replaced the CV-boots twice and need to do so again having accepted this as a result of the cranked bars. Also, cranking the bars 4” is not feasible. If your front end is within factory specifications, you should only be able to go 1 to 2 inches at maximum before hitting the upper bump stops.

Message: What is a good way to determine whether or not your front end is being effected by cranked torsion bars? How do I know if things are wearing or not? Any ideas from anyone?

Message: I have 4 inch blocks supporting the leaf springs on my 92 z 71. My front end sits about 2 inches lower than my rear. I want to level it out, but i don't know wether i should just put 2 inch blocks on my rear end , or should i just crank up my torsion bars 2 inches to level it out and also give me more ground clearance?
