Message: I had 4.56 gears in it and it was just as quick as stock, the 5.2 had NO problem pulling that big of a tire and I`m sure the 4.7 wouldn`t either.I put the stock 3.55s in it when I sold it and it really didn`t make much of a difference, the biggest thing was you had to turn off the overdrive on the highway and then it cruised just like it had the 4.56s back in it w/OD on.BTW I also owned a 93 Toyota before that truck and it had the Superlift 6in. susp and 3 in body lift with the same size tires 38s, and w/the v6 5spd it ran fine ... oh yeh it also had 5.71 gears front and rear... One more quick note I had NO problems with my Superlift kit it went on right ,held align. just like factory and never made any strange noises in the front end ... oh how I wish the would make us a kit!!!

Message: Joe,
I do mostly city driving and there's a lot of on/off ramps here in Austin, TX so if I run the 38s and the whiplash suspension I'm going to get either 5:13 or 5:29 gears. I'm basing this off of the 4WheelParts web site tire ratio guide. I have no experience with this truck at all. I think I'm going to go talk to a few of those Darango guys who are running 38s to see what they say about my 5.2 liter engine.
Scott do you think I'm doing an "over-kill" here?
thanks,

As for the recent posts about gearing & tire size, there are a couple of links that I keep handy. The first is a tire size & gear ratio chart showing the resulting (albeit ballpark) RPM ranges: http://www.4wheelparts.com/Tirel_Gear_Ratio.asp
The other one is a table showing available gear sets for our axles: http://www.ring-pinion.com/a-dodge.html
Oh, well, either way, I think I'll be content in the fact that I can still park in the garage.....for now....hehe

Message: I have heard everyone saying stuff about whiplash being bad but no one has produced any proof. I have looked all over the net and the only thing bad that I found was about some insurance issues and money problems. I have found nothing bad said about the actual lifts. I also have spoken to 3 people who are actually running their lifts one of which is on a 2001 silverado and they say the alignment is the same as it was with any other lift. No readjustments yet. The silverado was muddy as heck when I talked to him so I know he wheels his. Everything is replaced with their lift. The a-arms looked nice and beefy and I expect they will look the same on ours. There was alot of bad press also about whiplash because car companies and insurance companies don't like the trucks to be modded that much. Whiplash must be doing something right because there sure are alot of trucks with their lifts at the sema shows and so forth. Do what you want, but I will have one on my ride by June. Now I just gotta figure out how to keep my bumper at 29"! I'll take the body lift off ofcourse. I won't be wheeling it anyways, I'm just a poser! I just like people to think I'm a redneck or whitetrash! Now wheres that Arthur guy so I can spit some beechnut in his eye!

Message: Actual tire diameter varies between manufacturer and tire line. Some 38" tires measure LARGER than 38" inches even when installed on a vehicle and under load. Most manufacturers offer the actual tire size seperately and in addition to the size molded into the sidewall. Don't go by the sidewall alone!

I am assuming that you own a dakota. And Being the owner of a company that makes lifts I find it out that you don't make a lift for the dakotas. I know its a challenge because no one else has done it. Do you have any plans on making a lift for the dakota? Please let us know of any info regarding our dakotas.
Thanks...

Message: Scott or anyone else,
Scott since you lifted your old 99 Dak and ran 38s did you do any of the following to your old truck or run into any problems with the following:
1. (ABS) Anti lock brakes not working correctly. 2. The speedometer being off.
3. Since I'm going to replace the gears, how about the transmission not shifting at the right intervals with 38s.
Is there a company(s) that fix or reprogram these to work correctly or did you just live with these types of problems??
thanks, as always any help is greatly appreciated!

I must suggest against a Whiplash kit.. BUT! if you have your head DEAD SET ON THIS... Have a good install shop that has installed a whiplash kit before do the install.
The shop over here that's going to finish my lift is scratching there heads as we speak with this whiplash kit. They've had to re-align it 3 times so far and it's still not right. They also say that they wouldn't recommend EVER taking that truck off road.. Because of the poorly welded parts.
Call around to some local shops see if they have ever installed a whiplash kit before.. Also see what they think of them.

Message: Hey Knobby,
I've been following your whole truck ordeal sorry about all that. It sucks. Hopefully, you have it back soon.
I have talked to a shop in San Antonio and one in houston that's done a few whiplash installs but neither of them have done on on a Dakota or a durango and I can't seem to get hold of the guy who owns the Durango on the featured Whiplash web site so I'm still lurry. I live in Austin, TX and Whiplash doesn't have anyone in this area to work on my truck and I'm not willing to do what you are going through. I do not do any off roading so I think I'll be safe in that manner. If I did though, it would be slow trail.
I may just decide to run 35s. I've got a month or two to decide while I'm still saving. Are you going to be able to get some pics of those Whiplash suspensions?
thanks for the info :)

Message: 99 DAK5.2L4x4, I never noticed my ABS not working correctly , so I`m guessing it was OK , it never flashed any idiot lights on the dash either. As far as the speedo being off, if you re-gear the truck correctly it should be right or at least close, mine was a little off, I always speed anyway so it didn`t bother me much.Never had a problem with the tranny shift points with or without the 4.56s, only problem with the 3.55s was on the highway it couldn`t pull the OD gear it would keep jumping in and out.If you turned off OD it was fine.Superlift makes a Tru-Speed kit that is supposed to let you correct your speedo, change your shift points and some other things, can`t remember everything right now.Never got a chance to try it though.

Right-on. I checked that Superlift
TrueSpeed Speed Sensor Calibrator out and it's exactly what I was looking for. Only $163 bucks from:
http://www.rockymountainsusp.com/dodge4_94.htm
"Finally, a speed sensor calibrator has arrived that addresses the needs of computer-controlled vehicles running larger or smaller than stock diameter tires. The Superlift TruSpeed calibrator installs in line with the speed sensor and recalibrates the signal sent to the computer. Because the signal is recalibrated at its source, speedometer reading, ABS functions, and transmission shift points are all corrected to work with the non-stock tire size.

I have a new shop here in CA on the central coast - www.wildridez.com and am not willing to support a company that has compitted such fraud intentionaly! Full Throttle is a very good alternate and also out of Fresno, yet running a clean ship and as for the welds and work man ship, MUCH better! www.fullthrottlesuspension.com - I don't believe they have a kit yet for you Durango crazys looking for those big meatsYET. Call them and check it out. As for 38's on a Durango, fork out the pocket book for trannies and rear ends because they just won't hold up unless it's a light duty city pavement pounder, I had a 95 Tahoe with 13" lift and 38s. 10 months and 10g down the road I sold it and bought an '02 2500HD! Oh ya! 6in. fabtech and 35s all day long. It's been great and thanks for the info on Durangos from your forum. Good luck and any questions on whiplash or anyone else here in CA, drop me a line.

They said the whiplash kit is better quality then the Truckin-Suspension lift... Makes me feel all kinds of warm & fuzzy inside... now that I think about it.. same feeling I had right before I endoed on my Mountain Bike into a tree... anyway
At this point of you guys want to lift your trucks. Do the body lift.. It's less expensive and it has the same effect.

Message: I just got off the phone with Full Throttle this morning and they are working on a kit for the Durango and Dodge trucks. I mentioned the comment about Full Throttle and Whiplash being the same company and he reasured me once again that they have nothing to do with Whiplash. He also mentioned that Whiplash once again is having insurance problems. They just got dropped by there insurance company due to another 8in. kit that self destructed and the upper A-arm brock off on the hiway in So. Cali. Kid is in the hospital and dad wants to buy him a new Full Throttle lift for his new truck next month. Now that's my kind of dad! Being here in Cali I continue to hear these horror stories of Whiplash falling appart. FYI - Cognito Motorsports is also a new company coming out w/ Chevy 10 and 12" lifts. Be very careful- I used to work w/ him and he's gone under twice now, and also used to be a part of the Whiplash group. I wish for all of us, these companies would just build a good product made to last and make it possible for us as the seller and buyers to have some confidence in these products. I also just found out from Full Throttle that Truckin Suspension is another one to be cautious with. The owner used to work for Full Throttle and stole 3 lifts and then went off to copy and reproduce under a new name. They do make a 4.5 kit for the Durango though. I am ordering up 2 next week. I'll let you folks know how they look. Good luck to all and let me know if you have any further questions.

They are no better than Whiplash right now...no instructions, wrong or missing parts...mainly just selling untested kits as functional ready to go kits.Maybe if you get two kits you`ll have enough parts to complete one veh.Good luck, and keep us posted.

Tazz go with the body lift. Suspension lift on IFS is quite pointless.. Only thing it will help is your break over angle.. With a body lift and bigger tires you'd improve your break over angle anyway.

Message: I used to work w/ Griffen, the owner of Cognito and no, I will not buy his lifts. He used to own Gunner Off-Road in San Luis Obispo, CA but went under. To many big spendings and not paying his employees enough. Along with messing up too many trucks ie. not tightening bolts, not finishing in a timely manner, body damage while in the shop. The fabricator for Cognito is an engineering student from Cal Poly and things look good for quality and strength. He isn't making many and there only for the early 1500s at this point. Once again, I hate to sound like a broken record but I would go fullthrottle before any of these others. I was also told by Full Throttle that Truckin Suspension is an ex partner of his that jumped ship and went and duplicated there lifts. Who knows any longer in this buss. It seems that no one person can come up with there own design and run with it. I think that's why we are sticking more to dessert racing and running w/ companies like Camburg and Total Chaos. Long travel kits that are built to be beaten to death! Good luck and hope were having fun behind the wheel.

Almost all of them say the same thing "dodge changes their suspensions so quickly from year to year that we cannot make a profit off of products for their vehicles. Instead of a 4-5 year model cycle they seem to be changing every 1-2 years." None of them have had any plans for a Dakota lift except for Rancho whom I am beginning to believe simply tells anyone who calls they are "planning" a lift for your vehicle. I bet if you called them and asked for a 78 pinto lift they would say "we are working on it". Only one company I spoke with out of maybe 10-15 stated they might consider doing a Dakota/Durango lift since the new rams have a similar suspension and they could make a ram lift then simply scale it down for Dakotas/Durangos......i wouldnt hold my breath though
