I know the difference in open, LSD, and a locker. But exactly what is an air locker? IS it one that I can engage and disengage like a friend told me, or is it just another type of normal locker? I have a friend and he wants to keep up with me in his 94 2wd. I know that a locker will help, but it is not very streetable. Any suggestions?

An air locker is a locker that runs off a little air compressor you install. It is like a completely open diff until you push the button and engage it. Then it is fully locked like a solid diff. Not street worthy at all but awesome off road.

Hawkeye is right. A company that makes them is called ARB. There is a control in your cab that turns the locker "on" and "off" just by flicking a button. I'm not sure, however, if any are made for Dakota's.

So you don't consider it worth it to put into mine or my bud's? I don't mind having an open diff on the street, as long as I can somewhat quickly disengage it after I get off the ice on these NJ snow roads, or coming off the trail. If I do, I'm going to go for front and rear lockers, and possibly a different switch for each. IT's all a big question mark to me right now. Thnaks in advance for the help.

If ya got the cash, an ARB locker is that way to go! I had one in my Wrangler and I loved it. A push of the botton and the locker is FULLY engaged and works AWESOME. Push the button again, and your back to a FULLY open dif. Works well on the street OPEN (but NEVER have engaged while on street).

Like I said, IF you got the cash!! ALL worth it! :-)

When I asked them earlier this year about their products for my Dakota they said "early 2002."

Have you considered splitting the rear brakes? It's a common modification on 2wd off-road vehicles. You modifiy the cables to the parking brakes so that you can apply them individually with handbrake levers from the cab. If a rear wheel starts to spin you lift up on the brake lever and lock it. That causes the torque to go to the opposite wheel which has, you hope, good traction. And you continue along your way.

Haven't seen this on a Dakota. But it's an idea.

Cool, thanks for all the info guys. It seems as if I will one day I will put on an air locker. IF they make one. They might not show the dak yet because we have 2 different sized rear axles. I have a strange one from what some people say. My 97 has a Dana 35 front and 8.25 rear. Most people have the 9.25 rear with the V-8. Oh well, When I got my 3.73's from Randy's R&P I actually got AMC rear gears. A strange combo, but it worked.
