Subject: I'm looking for diff locks IP: Logged
Message: I've been looking around the net for a while and can't seem to find a set of diff locks for my 97 3.9 4x4. Not limited slip, but full lock. Any one have a web site and what is the stock Dak running for diffs? I know they're Dana's, but what size?
Thanks

Message: Check with national drive train parts. Their web site is not all that good. So call them and ask. If they can't get it, it doesn't exist.
Are you sure yours are Dana?

Message: I'll check them out, thanks. As far as I know, and what I was told, I'm running Dana 35's. The mechanic could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

Message: Ok, found out what my Dak has. I'm running a Dana 30 on the front and Chrysler 8.25 on the rear. All the parts I've found for the Dana 30 are Jeep parts. Will these parts still work? Stupid question, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
I plan on ordering gears for the front and rear, so I figured it would be a good idea to put lockers on as well. Like I said though, all the parts are for Jeep. What the F**k?!

Message: I believe whoever told you it's a Dana 30 is wrong. I'm about 99% sure a 97 has an IFS variation of a Dana 35 (27 spline IIRC). Don't know what locker is available for the front but that axle has a history of snapping the pinion out of the rear of the housing when over torqued. I've seen it happen to several.
Detroit Locker makes a locker for the 97-00 Chrysler 8.25" which is a 29 spline axle, different from the pre-97 8.25 which was a 27 spline.

Message: Thanks, I'll check it out. I'm not too worried about the pinion because it'll be replaced before I drop in the lockers. Speaking of gears, you think it would be good to run 4.10's?

Message: Hey Walt, I've been asking around at some of the shops in my area and I'm getting mixed answers. Some are saying 8.25, Dana 30, or Dana 35. Is there a sure way to find out what I've got?
Big question. Why do all the Dana applications come out as Jeep parts and will they fit? This is the main thing I'm wondering about.

Message: That common, many shops/people mis-identify the Dakota axles. I recently had someone locally ask me which front he had in his 96. Several shops/people told him he had a Dana 35. I showed him a Dana 35 cover next to a 7.25" and his cover matched the 7.25". The Dana 35 didn't come until 97.
87-96
Front = 7.25" IFS center section
Rear = Either 7.25" or 8.25"
97-2000
Front = IFS version of Dana 35
Rear - 8.25" or 9.25"
It's printed in these articles
http://www.sidekickoffroad.com/Pete4x4.htm
http://4wheeloffroad.com/roadtests/3069/index2.html
http://www.drivetrain.com/noslipdodgetruck.html
I know Detroit make a locker for the 8.25" rear.
Looks like ARB has one for it also.
http://www.jackit.com/lockers/dodge_airlockers.htm
Just keep in mind the spline count changed from 27 to 29 spline in 97 so you would have a 29 spline 8.25".
I don't know much about Jeeps but I believe all of the Dana 35 applications were rear axles only however, I believe the 91-2001 Ford Explorer had a Dana 35 front as well. I don't know what's available for them or even if it's compatible with the Dodge IFS variation.
2001+
Front = IFS C205MM - Same as 02+ Ram 1500 which is also IFS
Rear = 9.25"

Message: Thanks again. I called a custom shop down in Syracuse, NY and they said as long as its a Dana 35 the parts will fit. As for the rear, I've already got my mind set on an ARB. I need to do some looking around for the front. I might run an LSD, but not too sure. You also mentioned the pinion on the front was a P.O.S. so that will be changed out as well. I plan to run 4.10 or 4.56 all around. I'm glad you said something about my slines, I was going to put a 27 on there! That could have made some problems for me. Thanks for the help.

Message: accu auto I think is accuautoparts.com or something, has a pretty cool method of lookup.
You click on year of your Dakota. Then 8it gives options 4X4, 2WD, etc.
Then select engine form the next list. Then select which axle. When you click on the axle, here's the key, it gives a DESCRIPTION of the axle to help you know you got the right one!!!
Good luck. I got my front and rear 4.56 gears and Auburn from them last week. No problems.

Message: Yea, that's a brain fart on my behalf, I keep thinking the 2000 had the D35, it doesn't. They switched to the C205mm in 2000 along with rack & pinion on the 4x4. I've made that mistake a couple of time. The D35 was only 97-99.

Message: First things first. Loose the Thornbirds. I just got rid of my 33 thorns, garbage in the mud. They "plug up" quick. Go for the TSL or SSR.
Now onto your lockers. How deep are your pockets and how much are you willing to spend? Top brand right now are the ARB air lockers (800 per locker. not including compressor). Check out www.jackit.com.
Main question, do you drive it on the road?

Message: You don't want to put a locker in a stock Dakota front diff. Since they don't have manual hubs, you can't disengage and free wheel the front wheels. It'll be real harsh handling on the street and quickly tear itself up.

Message: if your looking for a cheap locker for your IFS then just remove the open diff carrier and weld the spider gears still...Im about to, but make sure you have a central-axle-disconnect if you drive it on the streets or you may be able to rig an other disconnect of some sort.
I have the axle disconnect but my drive shaft will still spin even in 2wd and will pull left but its ok if its a play truck. You could weld the rear also but then your wheels chirp and fight each other on the street...You just cant win I guess...
