hey can i go from an electic push button 4x4 to a manual t-case so i can have the shifter on the floor. i dont trust the electric t-case comes out of 4wd when u need it. i thought i heard something about getting a conversion kit or something? anyone help?

Sounds like a handful of modification you may need to pull that off. I had a level on the floor truck before and I find I like the switch better. So far 99000+ miles (many offroad in hard to reach places) and no failure with the switch.

if you have a t-case that is offered with a lever, then you should just be able to swap it over....I now that dodge uses the NP231 and NP241, but not sure if they have kept them for the new dakota...

on both cases, the shifter linkage is external, so you should be able to see how it works on your truck....if you can see the motor and linkage for the push button on the outside of the case, I am 99% sure you can swap it out for a lever

What thrasher was getting at is that the NP231's with the mechanical shifter have an external stub where the linkage attaches to the shaft that moves the shift forks.

I'm also not sure how the setup compares to the electric since my Dak and my wife's Durango both have manual shifter, but the idea seems feesible if you're willing to cut a hole in the floor...just get underneath and compare your setup to somebody with the shifter you want. If it's the same model T-case I'd imagine it should work.

This is the only thing keeping me from considering a new Dak.
But I will cut out the floorpan of a new Dak if needbe. The
several people I know with the switch (in both Ram & Daks) had
a solenoid failure in the TXFR case. Warranty issue non-the-less,
but still, I don't like the idea of getting stuck off-road cause
the damn switch stopped working!!! At least when I pull the lever,
I know it's in 4x4 mode.

Is it possible to swap out the TXFR case to one that uses a lever
like the one on my '99 5.2 CC? Just a thought.

I thought that even with the lever, there is still a vacuum operated solenoid???

If not, then that makes me feel better as I have the lever. I had been worried about getting stuck off road too when I thought I still had the solenloid.

Hey Tony, check out that link I posted. You'll have to copy and paste but if that would work on your truck, it would surely save you a lot of trouble.

If anything, there may be a tube running from the top of the t-case to equalize
the pressure inside the case, much like the tube on the rear axle. No vacuum
assist on the old lever operated t-case. The lever did all the work. The solenoid
basically replaces the lever. It switches the gears for you. The shift of the
lever up-down , is replaced with the solenoid moving a plunger in&out.

The link you posted raven is not what I had in mind, but definately better than
that damn switch! I am partial to the center console shifter. One thing that
website doesn't say, is if it switched to 4x4Hi, Neutral, & 4x4Lo. But would
imagine it would make a great backup to the switch when it craps out.

on the new rams, (well my 01 has it) and some of the dakotas (my 90 does have it but my 95 does not apear to) there is a front axle disconect system that is a vaccum actuated selanoid with slides what is basicly a splined shaft colar over a splines shaft locking the two shafts together
