Subject: 4x4 conversion IP: Logged
Message: i've got a 93 dakota quad cab sitting in the driveway. 5.2L, auto tranny...but it's 2wd. can anyone give me some info about converting this to 4wd, preferably with a soild front axle? ifs would be easy i'm assuming...just a matter of swaping it from a 4wd model, but i'd rather have a soild axle under it.

Message: well, if i'm going to be doing a solid axle swap, the only advantage in a 4x4 dakota to start with is the transfer case. if i already have a good engine, tranny, rear axle, body, frame, and interior, why get a differant truck? besides that, i'd just have a lot of fun doing the conversion.

Message: Like I said ...that's just me. I think there are so many used Dakotas available, you could save yourself alot of grief by starting off with something a little closer to your goal.
Life is too short...but hey, if that's what turns your crank, then by all means don't let me pi$$ on your parade!

Message: I see what you mean now, about going to a solid axle ...not much advantage starting off with a 4x4.
That would be worth the trouble, good luck!

Message: thanks for the input anyways...and i should mention that i'm in michigan, so a truck with NO rust on the body isn't the easiest to find. the only thing it really needs is a tune up, and i'm also rebuilding the trans. did i mention the truck was given to me? can't beat that price!

Message: You'll have to change the tranny also unless you use a divorced transfer case. Or at least rebuild you existing tranny with a 4wd tail housing, output shaft, etc. so it'll bolt up to a stock NP231.
