Message: There should be a make and build number on the transfer case. That will tell you what the inner workings of it are to know if what your planning will work with that transfer case. Also advanceadapters.com makes an np-231 heavy duty transfer case rebuild kit and full fron cv-axle conversion kit for the dodge np231s. If your exaust pipe is below the front cv axle then just get a full axle with a lift kit. The kit will lower the axle enought to clear the exhaust pipe with no modifications to the exhast system. if you are planning to lift the truck or do a straight 4wd conversion that would be a good thing to do.

Message: I've been doing some research on the web about stuff like this lately. I'm looking to rebuild my np231 (possible chain slippage and/or other problem) into an 231HD/241 hybrid.
If you do a search for "np231" in yahoo, you should come up with a bunch of different t-case/drivetrain sites. Talk to some of the tech guys on these sites. They could tell you for sure.
As far as I've read, the np231 has been relatively unchanged over the years. The internals might be slightly different (gear pitch, etc...), but the case measurements should be about the same. The np231 has been used on jeeps, dodges, and even chevy trucks (the 1/2-ton Dodge case is the HD model with a larger chain and such). The big things that will determine interchangabilty are the spline count(input and output shafts) and what "drop" it is (whether the front driveshaft drops out of the driver or passenger side.
These are just a few things you need to look at. You'll have to do some more research for your model year, but if you already have an np231 in your truck, there's a good chance you could get it to work. Do a search for a company called "JB Conversions" and give them a call. I've talked to them before since many of the articles I read point to them for tech support and parts.
Hope this helps! I'm working on something similar with upgrading/rebuilding the t-case in my '98!
