Subject: Snorkel/intake IP: Logged
Message: The other week I went mudding through some fairly deep puddles. At one point I think I took some water through the intake (stock airbox, K&N, smorkel removed). Engine spuddered and threatened to die if left in idle and power was non-existent. Drove around a little while in 1st gear and 3,000 RPM and problem went away after about 5 minutes.
My question is, has anybody ever tried to install a hummer or jeep-type snorkel on their Dakota? Has anybody ever cut a hole in the hood and did some bodywork to put a cowl on and seal it to an airpan to suck air from the windshield? I think either would solve my water ingestion problem. I would put the snorkel back on the airbox, but it would only add to the problem since I have the glassworks fenders and water readily splashes up to where the snorkel goes.
Any advice would be appreciated. I'm pretty competent with my tools and like to experiment when I have time, but don't have a lot of cash to blow.
Been back in the mud a few times since with no problems, but I'd rather not let this problem happen again.
Thanks in advance!
~Kory

Message: hey kory, i feel your pain. i havent sputtered yet, but i have been through a few creeks, and mud holes that have scared me. i have not put my plan into action, but my thought was to run a piece of pvc (i know its crappy) behind the fender and such, back to the windshield pillar. i have been trying to find a ARB safari snorkel, that i could then run up the windshield to look ok. i dont really want pvc running up my A pillar. just my thoughts.

Message: Unfortuntly I know exactly what you have gone through I've locked up two different motors in my 98 Durango. Only thought that I can give you is to look at a Toyota Tacoma or a 4-Runner snorkel kit dependig on witch side you want it on. Or you could be like me and ordered one of each, I also have bought one of those intakes that has a round filter and two inlets one on each side. Only thing I have found is trying to figure out how to hook it all up.

Message: i found some sites that have ARB Safari Snorkel parts, to at least finish off a "rig" job. On ebay there is a listing for a fairly cheesy looking 4wd snorkel kit for $100. I wasted my horns crossing a creek on thanksgiving, so i have some other stuff to sort out in the mean time. if you come up with something, i would love to see it.

Message: Hey bro I had that problem too. My buddies were skeet shooting, and I figured I was gonna blow some donuts in this *puddle* that ended up being 4 feet deep. I thought I blew my motor, and I was told I was very lucky I didn't. I shut the truck off, plugged in my obdII scanner into my pcm, and saw there were no errors. Restarted the truck and it ran great. Flushed my engine and tranny about a week later just to be safe. What I was gonna do is just buy a replacement filter element for a snorkel, they go for about $50, and just run black pvc through the fender, maybe rhino-line it for looks. Haven't done it yet though because sucking air through feet of ducting as oppposed to inches will kill what little power I have.
How deep can that pond possibly be?

Message: I used the stock airhat and then a pair of flanges like you'd use for making a CAI. Cut a hole through the firewall and bolted the flanges using plenty of silicone to seal it. Then I just had a piece of exhaust pipe bent to fit and mounted my air cleaner up under the dash.
I tried a "regular snorkel" and it didn't work I threw mud all up in that bad boy.

Message: Today I ran my 1994 dodge dakota through 3 feet of water, sucked a crap load of water through the intake. spent 4 hours out on the trail getting the engine dried out (pulled the plugs and turned it over for a long time because it was throwin water out of the last 2 plugs) and got it running again. so far no harm done, but i am going to invest in a Safari snorkel and rig it up to fit my dakota.
