Message: I have a 2000 4x4 dakota and i want a 3 inch lift, i dont know whether to get a body lift or save my money for a suspension lift. I want to know if body lift are worth it bacause i have heard a lot of bad about them. i am also wondering where a good place would be to get a grille guard and the bars that go on the side of the bed. Any hint on cheap, but good mud terrain tires would help too. Thanks

Message: Body lifts do exactly like there name says. They lift the body away from the frame. The only benefit is that they allow the use of larger tires be increasing the distance between the fender and tire.
Suspension lifts lift the truck from the frame up. They increase your breakover clearence. The clearence from your frame to the ground. They also increase the distance from your tire to fender.
Personally I think a 1-2" body lift can be a part of a well thought out suspension. I dont really go for 3" body lifts. That is just to much. There is alot more force placed on the body bolts at that point. In everyday driving conditions you wont have any problems. But I think over time or if you were in an accident you could sheer the body clear of the frame much easier.
Suspension lifts raise your COG, center of gravity more then a body lift. With IFS the installs are more complicated and over all cost more. The main benefit would be you are replacing parts of your stock suspension lift with parts that SHOULD be stronger and take the off road rigors better.
So if you are just looking for a way to put some bigger tires on and do some mild off roading then body lifts should be fine. If your going all out and want the best then go for a suspension.
