Subject: What about Powertrax No-Slip??

I have a 2wd and am looking at installing a limited slip/ posi trac rear-end. I have heard a little about the Powertrax. Is it a good unit? I am mostly street, but when I do have to go off road I don't want to have to worry about getting stuck as easily. How does it preform on the street, and off- road? Is it a "do-it-yourself" install? What kind of money are we talking about?

I have a factory 8 1/4 inch Trac-loc differential. I live in Vermont, and I find that I often have to shift into 4 wheel drive to get up hills during snow storms, even with the Trac-loc.

The posi will VASTLY help if you go at slow speeds, and off the line. Your much less likely to have tire spin, but it can and does still happen. And they are VERY usefull if you wanna do power slides, expecially the 4-wheel drift around a corner.

Well I have first hand experience with the no-slip.I installed one back in February in my 92 Dakota 4x4. Well, off road it is great,and on-road,well... I am considering taking it back out. Why? It makes A LOT of noise when turning. LOUD POP! SNAP! CRACK! type noises.It WILL scare you the first time it happens.Any other time people ask what is wrong with your truck!! Installation is easy,especially after your first one,so I'm thinking about removing it, and when I plan a serious wheelin trip,just pop it back in,I can probably have it done in 1 hour.But after 6 months,the noise is really getting to me.

OK, I just installed the No-Slip last week and I don't regret it at all. It waaaay quieter than I thought it would be, but the driveline seems just a bit clunkier and a bit looser. I have an automatic and from what I've heard they are quieter in autos. Maybe 92Dakota4x4 has a manual trans???

It works just how i wanted it to work. It will start chirping the inside wheel on tight turns when you give it a little juice. But anything at low throttle (and high traction) the diff stays open. Perfect.

I've had it off road a couple times and WOW! Totally crushed my buddy's F150 with lsd. A stout lsd might be another option, but they're a bit spendy when icluding istallation. I got my no-slip from rocky-road.com for $370 and installed it myself in about 3 hours... although it would take half the time knowing what i know now.

Sorry for all the words... what i meant to say is just get the no-slip if you have an automatic!

How loud are these things? I'd like to change mine out, in fact, I need to because my rear end is shot. I'm trying to weigh out my options, but I'm don't want something that people are going to ask, "What's wrong with your truck?". Are they really that loud? Are their some manufacturers that are quieter than others? Or are there ones that we should stay away from?

Hey Jason mine is an automatic.It seems to lock up under any throttle whasoever.Have you driven up and down parking lot aisles yet?It really snaps and makes noise then. I wish I could hear someone elses truck with the no-slip,cause mine is LOUD! I'm in Orlando FL in case anyones wondering

Yeah, I've been through plenty of parking lots without noticing any noise at all. Part of it could be because I have my exhaust dumped after the gibson muffler and it ain't exactly quiet! Funny thing though, just after I posted yesterday I went to lunch and did hear a sorta loud click. Pretty sure it was my locker, but not positive. Usually the only thing I hear around corners is my inside tire scuffing. The locker itself is much quiter than I expected. Maybe I got lucky and got a good one???

Yeah, I'm in Minneapolis MN, so this locker thing will get interesting once the streets get covered with that white stuff in a couple 3 months. I'll just have to be a little more carefull in the twisties...

As far as other manufacturers of lockers, you have the Detroit Locker that my buddy has in a Ram. Seems pretty quiet too. Its a bit pricier and harder to install. Its a full carrier replacement as opposed to the no-slip that just slides into the carrier replacing the side gears and spider gears. The Detroit is a solid piece though, and supposedly will be the LAST thing to break in your drivetrain. Powertrax also makes a Lock-Right that is along the same lines as te no-slip but cheaper, but i've heard its louder. Any lsd should be very quiet, but will never be as functional off road as a locker.

It will cost more money for a full on locker. That is where most decide on the power trax. A Detroit or Auburn Locker would best and virtually noise free. You hear it engage once you put it in drive but not on turns and stuff. You still get tire chirp since that can not really be avoided. This is where and why the power trax is clunky. Also Power Trax is not available for all axels and or gearing setups.

I have the detroit locker and have no issues with it. A buddy of mine has the Auburn and likes his. There is a noticable difference in the 2 but over all they are great.

Let me see if Perpetrate can answer that one. He just put on a Auburn and I am not sure what his opinion of it on road is. I am pretty sure it is a LSD locker.

I broke the stock Mopar LSD and it defaulted to open so I thought I had an open. I bought a Auburn LSD and 4.10's to go with the 33's. I did not go with a locker because I tow a 5,000 pound trailer and did not want the locker to interfear.

On the street it is smooth with mild slip when turning. If you gas it the inside tire will spin. Off road it "locked" the loose wheel but I was still lacking traction from the front diff. I now have on-board-air so I could have gone with an ARB air locker but the easy of use of the Auburn is nice.

The diff was easy to install but you have to grind some metal to get the new larger Auburn case to fit in our 8.25" carriers. Just a little excess fat anyways, the gears were way harder than the diff to install. Just a diff is easy besides setting the back-lash. Trial and error.
