Message: You have open diffs front and rear. To fix this yu can either put lockers in it or limeted slip diffs. My thought would be limited slip from alburn they are a good unit real strong. I had them in a 84 ramcharger worked great.

Message: Shane try taking a different route up your hill. You need to know the limitaions of your truck. It is very important to pick your line carfully. Even more important if you have a truck with open diffs and limited ground clearance. I had an 88 dakota and I was able to go most places without a lift and with open diffs.

Message: shane,
I have a 92 dakota 4X4, and I ran into the same problems. So I lifted it, and put 33" tires under it. made around 250-270 hp out of my 3.9, and put a powertrax no-slip locker in the rear. Beware, if you make these modifications, or similar ones to your truck the chrysler 7.25 front end is too weak, it will break. Also they don't make anything for the front, other than open diff. So if you want a locker up front you will need to do an axle swap. Your truck is three years newer than mine, yet still very similar. I'm in the middle of researching an axle swap, so if you are determined to have all four tires spin, Then E-mail me and I'll let you know how my swap comes out. also if you make the swap the lift kits become cheaper.

Message: Brian,
Having a V8 doesn’t make much difference in off-road ability. Some of the most capable 4x4’s had only 4 and 6 cylinder engines (ie. Willys and CJ Jeeps). Sometimes having a bigger engine is more of a disadvantage because of the additional weight and it’s easier to loose traction by overpowering the wheels. The trick to off-roading is gearing and traction. A school bus can climb a steep hill with enough distance and momentum behind it. I’m more impressed with someone who can start and the base and crawl up it at a half a mile an hour. That’s the true off-roader. The V6 Dakota has an excellent power to weight ratio and is quite capable off-road in a stock configuration. It sounds like Shane’s problem is inexperience combined with low traction. What is he running for tires? A limited slip or locker will help him greatly. Gearing would be another improvement.
My V6 Dakota has 4.10 gears, a Detroit Locker, a re-geared 4:1 low range and aggressive tires mounted on bead lock rims. I have wheeled with guys in V8 Dodges, Fords and Chevys and have run circles around most of them. They may be able to beat me in a drag race, but off-road they can’t touch me.
PS. I still drive my Dakota Daily. 110 Miles round trip to and from work each day (half are back roads). I was concerned at first I might have trouble with the locker while driving on paved roads, but now that I have driven on it for a while, I don’t even notice it. I do notice the gears however. Gas mileage is slightly over 10mpg and top speed is around 75mph but I can live with it.

As for you guys who want to say Shane doesn't deserve a truck because he doesn't know anything about it, were you all born with instant knowledge of trucks and off-roading or did you have to learn at some point and time?

Message: I have to say that I disagree with Walt. A V8 does make a very big difference when driving off road. I have a '00 Dakota with a 318 and I take it through some rought stuff. I've wheeled with guys that drive Jeeps, Z-71s, other Dodges and Fords. Most of the Jeeps have been 4 bangers and when they have to put the pedal to the floor to get through a hole I can go right behind them just idleing. I've also owned a Dodge 1500 with a 360 and I most definately like my Dakota much more. Walt bring your Dakota to Texas and we'll see what it is really made of. Just because a truck has a V8 doesn't mean it will break things easier. A smaller motor has more strain put on it than a larger one does, so why so a V8 is more likely to break something.

Message: Actually Mar an auto is a little better cause you can keep power going without risking burning up a clutch like on a stick, also the torque converter will give you a little more rear wheel torque where as a stick will give you a bit more rear wheel HP. Not saying a stick isnt good off road at all. They are very good. Same reasons why a stick is faster racing and an auto is a better puller. But yeah, I agree, V6's are fine for off-roading, but I realllllly like a V8.

Message: I will have to disagree about a auto being better. One the auto weighs more. 2 a stick lets you manage your rpms. I wheel all the time and in some hary places. I do not burn up the clutch. Do I lug it out yes. I perfur a stick. Also I do not like autos for towing. Why did the big rigs use them for so long. Cuz you can manage your rpms better while towing on hills. If the road is flat great. But here in Utah the roads are not flat. Also while carring a big load, The trany can help slow you down. When we get a load of wood in the spring for winter. We load a 4 horse trailer full with some in the bed. (I am not doing this with my little truck) We go down a canyon called Mayfeild canyon. Steep and switch backs. We put it in 4low and first. I would rather have a stick to hold me back then a auto. I think autos are great but I don't think they are a better performer. Better gas mileage, better to tow with, and my opionion better to wheel with. Personally I think a stick is better. Altho you can't beat a auto around town that is for sure. I just never drive in town.
my 2 cents.

Message: Before I say any more, No flame wars here. Just a friendly discussion on differing opinions.
The reason big trucks use sticks is because they need a bunch of gears in order to manage the weight they are pulling. As for pickups, I have watched some trucks hook up to each other before and the auto won every time beacause it could keep a constant pressure on the line, the stick would start spinning its tires. Same when they were pulling dead weight, the auto made more torque at the rear wheels because of the torque converter. The stick does have better compression breaking. I wasnt meaning that autos are better performers overall, just that there are some areas that the auto has the edge, and some where the stick does.
Great Moab pics. I would love to go out there on a trip.

Message: More friendly disscusion, autos produce alot of heat. also, blow a tranny line your stuck. I have seen many sticks burn the clutch and keep going. I have never seen an auto make it home that went up in smoke. Granted you can spend a couple grand and get an auto to take more abuse but never what you can put a stick through.

Message: We all agree that offroading is fun activity, and I believe that sticks have their places just like autos have their places. I cant say for sure what type of offroading should have what type of tranny control, but I doubt an end to this discussion is in sight because we all recognize the pros and cons of each type.
Look at motorcycles for example, they use sticks. Baja trucks use both, but mostly autos. rockcrawlers seem to prefer sticks. On my trail rides in Utah, Idaho, etc., I prefer an auto. We all have our preferences and there is NO SUCH THING as "right" or "wrong" in this. Its just preferences and differences.
This website would be boring if we all agreed on the same things all the time! Thus, we share experiences and preferences. That is why we come here - to learn from each other. I emphasize the word SHARE, not push or force.
