I have been seeing some advertisements for a Dodge Ram "offroad package" lately. I think it involves a factory 2" lift, 35" tires, and probably an LSD in the rear diff, some custom graphics, a rollbar and lights in the bed, and stuff like that. Really makes the Dakota's cousin look cool.

Has anyone heard if Dodge plans on making an "offroad package" for the Dakota's any time soon?

The Off road pkg for the Ram is just 17 inch rims and slightly larger tires, more like 32's but slightly smaller, and a little stiffer springs and shocks. It does come with the LSD but that is still an option on any of them. Oh and is also gives you the little Off Road decal under the 4x4 on the tailgate and I belive my brochure said its has skidplates for the gas tank and transfer case as well. It is a little taller than a standard 4x4 but only by about a half in to an inch. This is from the tires. It mostly consists of normal options but they are combined into 1 package with a few extras. Would be very nice if they would offer a similar setup for the Daks.

The tires are 275/70/17. For all the difference in price between the regular and the offroad you could build one helluva rig out of a regular sport.

I wish Dodge had an off-road package for my Dakota. I have been in the Ram Off-Road and it is pretty sweet. The ground clearance on the stock Dakotas should be good enough to plow through anything (with the correct treads). Anybody know of some good trails for off-road Dakotas in the midwest (especially Michigan). I have gone to the Jeep Jamboree site and tried to find some appropriate locations. Later.

Dodge offers some pretty useful offroad options; all you have to do is order them on your truck. My 2000 Club Cab 4x4 Sport has:

*Skid plates
*31x10.5 tires
*Full-time transfer case
*Anti-spin differential
*Heavy duty service group, which includes a 750 amp alternator, 136 amp alternator, heavy duty engine cooling, transmission cooler, power steering cooler
*Trailer tow group
*6x9 fold-away power side mirrors
*fog lamps

The benefits of some of those options may not be obvious. The bigger battery and alternator are useful if you want to add an air compressor or other electrical accessories. The trailer package means you have a solid rear recovery point. The mirrors fold instead of breaking if you cut a turn too close. You can also adjust them from your seat so that you can actually see your own rear tires. Very useful on tight trails.

My Dakota continues to amaze me with its offroad abilities. And I've managed to surprise more than a few Jeep drivers as well.

cheers,

-J.

For you guys who are less than informed about the Off-Road Package on the Ram it is more than just bigger tires and shocks etc. The off road package has a differant drive geometry that includes the upper and lower control arms and the Pitman arm location and track bar location it is designed to handle better in off road conditions. Try buying a lift kit for A Ram equipped with the off road package and you will soon learn that Skyjacker is the only company that even offers a lift for the off road package right now I would sugest buying a standard 4x4 and then lifting it to your desired height. You lose 1" of lift because of the off road ergonomics so a 5" would give you 4" etc. Happy Trucking

I thought that the off-road rams were 2 and a half inches taller, it's tall enough that I can tell from a distance whether it's off-road or not. And I believe that the skid plates and other accessories mentioned by some dak owners in this thread on their truck is considered "off-road" package and is all that will be seen for Daks right now.

The Off-Road package on the Rams is the only way to get 4.10 gears in a Ram, stock.

Well, I gess you'll have to go for Ford if you want a 4.10:1 rear end in a 1/2 ton 2x4.

Why dosn't the Dakota have a Off-Road package with a 4.10 rear?
