Subject: 3.9l to 5.2l Conversion IP: Logged
Message: I am converting my V6 to a 318 V8. I know irs popular mod and straight forward. However I want to know which trans to get.
1) I can rebuild my A500
2) Buy a NV3500
3) Buy a NV4500
4) Buy a 727
I would like to convert it to a Manual 5-spd but only if i can find a trans that will work well w/o problems. What will I need to convert the trans to a maunal. I have pedals and all the in cab stuff. I know I'll need a clutch, Flywheel, Torque converter, what else? Is this too ambitious?

Message: Welcome Kevan. If you want to stay with your current automatic you'll need to have the A500 rebuilt stronger to hold up to the higher torque of the V8.
An NV4500 is too large to fit underneath the tranny tunnel, and it is very heavy.
An NV3500 is a great tranny and is the "proper" tranny for that engine in that truck.
A 727 (with small block bell housing) will work. It has the ability to be built very strong, but you give up overdrive.
Since you present PCM is for a V6/auto combo it won't work with a V8 engine or manual tranny. You'll need to get the right PCM to match your truck's new configuration: 1995 4x2, V8, manual.
What's your left foot doing? ============== 2002 Graphite QC SLT Plus, 4.7L, NV3500, Superchips 3715, 3.92 LSD, R/T rear swaybar, no chrome, loads o'fun... 2001 Patriot Blue Durango SLT, 4.7L, 45RFE, Superchips 3715, 3.55 Open (for now) 1999 Forest Green Dakota RC Sport, 2.5L, NV1500, 3.55 Open

Message: Thanks for the help! I'll cross the NV4500 off the list. I'm struggling with the manual or automatic. I want a fun truck so the manual is preferable but maybe not cost effective.
Any ideas to build up a 1999, 318? I'm thinkin headers and air intake. Are there any modest mods that will add some HP's?

Message: I would go with the built strong a500. it does have od. the 727 will fit but if you run headers on the right side(passenger side) you will have to dent then so they will clear the right side.Iam running a built a500 behing a stroked 340 no problem.

Message: I am worried about the bell housing of the A500 bolting to the 1999 5.2 that I am swapping it for.
