Subject: CUT COILS?YES OR NO IP: Logged
Message: My buddy has a 97 Dakota sport,this saturday hes cutting his coils and taking a leaf or 2 out of the rear end, and cutting down his bumpstops.Is this good or bad so i can warn him.

Message: What kota said but also listen . . cuttin the coils will make the front REAL stiff and removing leafs will make the rear REAL loose . . think about it . . sounds like a 16 yr old that makes $5.50 an hour wants a sports truck but wants it for FREE. NOTHING in life is free!! Save some money and buy a drop kit . . HOTCHKIS!

Message: I does eventually prematurly wear out the ball joints, it put em at a bad angle they were never designed to go.
Trust me I know.
It did take like an after noon to put my front in the weeds though.
I have to say, in many ways it helped my ride, mine had alot of miles on it and all the springs were sloppy and bouncy. After I cut a coil and a half out the front it stiffened up real nice but it bottoms out REAL EASY and the sound of those A arms hitting the frame at 65 is not pleasnt.
I however didnt take leaves out as I still haul with mine from time to time.
He would be smart to put in drop spindles and relocated spring hangers, but you said that aint his way, right?

Message: Obviously, we're trying to stop the inevidible...Messing up a perfectly good Dakota! In the amount of time it would take to cut coils and remove leafs, your buddy could easily install a nice drop kit that won't totally screw up his suspension and can be "aligned" by a good alignment shop. Take our words for it...tell him not to do it! With the amount of money spent on repairing ball joints and things that will be messed up, he could easily afford a kit and even throw in some shocks. What seems to good to be true...usually is! I found out the hard way when I was younger and thought I'd save a buck or two. In the long run, I didn't.

Message: not to mencion the wasted money he is going to spend on tires wearing out prematurely due to haveing a suspencion that is not alignable.
also, if he decides to put it back to stock, he will have to pay for a stock suspencion. i hope he is going to keep it for a long time

Message: Well I have to honestly admit that I have no uneven tire wear, thought for sure I would but none.
Now I did have it aligned at a shop that does alot of lowered and raised vehicles so maybe thay know something a regular alingment shop dosnt, I dont know.
It took about 8000 miles to wear them out to the point they got sloppy, they were really worn out at about 5 but I just kept going.
You have to remember that I do everything on my truck myself and have been an ASE certified mechanic so anything that goes wrong I can fix.
I DONT recomend this kind of suspension mod if you cant fix anything that will happen as a result yourself.

Message: A buddy of mine has an S-10, and he cut the coils, well he got the look, but let me tell you that thing rides like a ton of bricks... Doesn't handle worth a sh!t. The springs are meant to be the way they are for the load of the truck.
So in short... NO! Do not cut the coils!!!

Message: I have a set of Fabtech 2" lift springs cut two coils (yeah... i am a cheap@ss). The thicker spring made it handle real well and i am pleased with it. I use to have leaf springs removed on the back....DONT DO IT!!!!!!! IT SUCKS!!!!!!! bouncy as h*ll and traction went to non existant. just go for some 3" blocks, they are cheap and easier to do. He might say he doesnt care about ride quality... until he rides in a truck with a empty bed and missing a couple of leafs.

If I am driving behind you and your stuff breaks and makes me wreck my truck or hits my truck you are gonna be out of alot more then coils and leafs. Nose, legs, arms, hands . . . I am breakin them all!! I spent good money on my truck and I hate it when I see some kid with Jigga-Rigged crap all over his car and everything on it lights up. No offense but I have enough money to buy your house and a few of your trucks if I wanted.
You do make a good point though, people who dont know the limitations of modified parts should not mess with them but there are some of us who have considerable automotive knowledge and modify parts that wont do what you discribed.
Hope your carreer in law inforcement works out for you.

Now, in reply I cut the coils on my 99 Dakota and shortly after bought control arms and installed them with new facotory coils, and am very happy, skip my mistake and just buy control arms!

say 1 to 2" drop MAX.
It's really entertaining to read all the "I cut 4
complete coils and my truck rode like crap on
the bumpstops" stories. No Sh_t!
There's nothing wrong with cutting coils as
long as you don't go crazy or cut too much. I'd
be willing to bet my Quad with cut RT front
coils rides a lot better than most drops using
Japan/China/Godonlyknows springs in the
front.
Coils in our Dakotas are FIXED RATE, which
means the spring can be shortned slightly
without altering the rate.
Better lowing springs, like Hotchkis, have an
increased rate for better handling and less
bottoming (That's why you need really good
Bilstein re-valved shocks for it to ride good).
I'd bet most of the cheap aftermarket springs
have a lower or equal rate when compared to
stock.

Message: I agree with Lemmers. I accomplished a 1"/2" drop on my '01 v6 QC with a half coil cut on the front springs and 2" blocks in the rear. The ride quality is essentially unchanged. I'm extremely happy with the ride, and that's one of the reasons I bought the Dakota. The ride is superior to its competition. I run 17s with 60 series tires. I really like that look.
I don't recommend cutting more than 1/2 to 3/4 coil. If you want more than 1 inch, buy a kit.
