Subject: AF/Water Temp Guage install help
IP: Logged

Message:
I just got new autometer guages and need help installing them. 2001 DAK

For my AF (air fuel) guage, where is the O2 siganl wire located exactly, and is there anything speacial I need to do when installing?

My other guage is a water temp, is there a wire I can tap into, or can I piggyback on the existing watertemp sensor for the "Idiot" light?

Thank you for the help,

Nick

on the PCM there are 3 connectors.....unplug the one closest to the firewall....find the orange wire with the tan stripe....thats the front O2 signal wire, strip off a little insulation and tie in lead from the AF meter. Just did mine 3 days ago....good luck

I just want to be sure, can I just use a wire tap on the O2 sensor wire, that would make it very easy.

Thank you

do not just tap into the wire coming out of the water temp sensor, that will give u a false reading, there is a specific voltage coming out to go to your stock gauge and if u pick it up from there they both will be wrong

no no no no.
youre begging for trouble with the a/f gauge, that much i can tell you.
email autometer, they will tell you EXACTLY which wire to tap into (im not doubting you guys, but youll save yourself MUCH trouble by doing it right the 1st time)
when i installed my a/f gauge, i ran the wire thru the large grommet for the e-brake in the floorpan, and to the 02 sending unit (yours might differ.) you MUST tap into your truck's wiring harness to the o2 sensor, not the 02 sensor's harness. dont know why, but its true. you MUST SOLDER THE CONNECTIONS!!!!!!!!! a quick-splice WILL NOT WORK CORRECTLY. a/f gauges are low impedence (or vice versa, im really tired right now) instruments, so you must get the proper signal from the low voltage-sending o2 sensors.. do a search on this site for 'air/fuel gauge' and you will see what im talking about..make sure you solder them well! dont get frustrated, it took me a lot of fiddling to get it right...anyway...good luck!!

p.s.-when you have the gauge's red and black hooked up properly, you will see 1 led lit up in the rich side of the gauge. that is how it will look until the 02 sensors warm up to 600 degrees..some say it takes 30 seconds with heated sensors (which ours are)..my experience with my r/t tells me it takes about 2 minutes of engine running before it turns on.

check speedtweaks.ent....Bernd has it listed on his tips and tricks section....thats where I read it, did it, and passed it on to you.....Bernd is the Dakota Guru....they say that the best idea is to get a designated 02 sensor just for the meter because it provides more accurate readings, but I tapped into the wire leading to the PCM
