Message: yes i stated the NEXT! well if you get the 4x4 mag Petersen's 4Wheel Drive & Off-Road you should look at page 22. on that page (for those that don't get it) it states the following:
"The trade journal Automotive News recently lifted the veil on Daimler-Chrysler's product plans for 2003-2006. Here's what to expect from Jeep and Dodge Truck...... The Dakota is slated for a redo for 2004. It's styling will borrow from the M80 and Powerbox concept trucks, and it may be smaller than the current pickup. The 5.7L Hemi V-8 may be offered as an option alongside the 3.7L V-6 and 4.7 V-8......A year after the Dakota revision, the Durango will be reworked as well. It's platform will still be the Dakota."
that last part was for you guys that like the Durango to. for those that have no clue what the M80 or the Powerbox looks like here's the address to Dodge's concept page with it.
the M80's address:

the Powerbox's address:

Message: I think their info is a little old, some plans have been changed. Also they seem to be mixing some of the info up. There is no way there will be a new Dakota for 2004, the concepts and spy photos would have been out at the most receint car shows at the very minimum. The Durango is getting it's own platform and will be bigger then the current Durango. It will come out first and not until the 2004 model year, the Durango has been showing up in spy photos and it's concept was the powerbox (although it looks like they dropped that styling, and are just going with the new Rams styling.) Then the Dakota will be after that (2005) and should be about the same size as the current model. The M80 is the new small truck from Dodge, it is a Dakota variant but smaller. It is due to be out in 2006 but is being fast-tracked so it may be even sooner. There are supposed to be a new small Jeep based on the m-80 also (which the concept looks more like a Jeep to begin with.)

Message: Well, since Diamler-Chrysler got 6 years out of the GenII and currently 7 years on the GenIII, who knows what their timeline is. The GenIII doesn't seem "outdated" to me. Since the Ram 1500 got the Hemi so quick, can the Dak be far behind? I wonder if State Farm is making up a new rate table with a "Hemi flag"?

Message: I'm just glad I got my R/T when they were still cool looking and had some performance. I bet dodge will not offer the hemi in the dakota just to be dumb and keep on making bad choices. They will make a lil 4 banger with a turbo but wont offer a sport truck with a hemi???????? They could at least sc the 4.7, but they wont. I heard the new R/T's will be a trim package. What a joke.

Message: Well, per a dodge Truck salesman, the new Daks and Durangos will be modelled more like the new RAM. Dodge (supposedly) is planning on upgrading the 2500 and 3500 series full size pickups to the new body styling, then the akotas and Durangos will follow.
And as for the Jeeps...
The best engine ever built will be no more. They are doing away with the Chevy-block straight 6 engine and replacing it with the standard Dodge v-6.
All I can say is "UGH!"
One of the main reasons I went for the Dak is it still looked good. The new 1500 series remind me of a whale-shark. Big gaping mouth waiting to suck in innocent little passer-bys.

Message: Michael, ya think you overstated a bit? The straight 6, the best engine ever made? Come back on earth and look around. I don't think they'd believe that on a Chevy site! I can think of another 6, the 225 slant that is every bit of the other and a helluva lot more economical. I had a Grand Cherokee with the straight 6 and got 14 mpg, it was tired at 75,000 miles. I've had several slant 6's including one that lasted 250,000 miles. I never got less than 20 mpg.
Now, if we want to talk about v-8's......

Message: Lab Rat, I was under the same impression, with the 4.0L a basic update over the old 232/258 from AMC.
Dragon, you've got to be kidding. Listening to a Dodge truck salesman? They seem to the LAST to know anything. Upgrading the 2500 and 3500 series to what new body style? They already look like the brand new body style of the 1500. Why would they "upgrade" to something new when they are already new?
