Message: I have a 96 ford contour. trying to sell it to get $$ for mods on the dakota. Situation is this the check engine light is on. states that the engine is running lean and missing at times. Replaced the PVC Valve still the light came on. With all the knowledge on engine in this site i thought someone might know the cause of this. Any help would be appreciated the quicker i sell it the quicker i can get my throttlebody for the dakota. Thanks

Message: Check for vacuum leaks. That's the first place to go when you start running lean.

Message: Clean the MAF sensor (if equipped). A $3 can of TB safe spray should do it. Also clean the Throttle Body and Idle Air Control on the side of the Throttle body. (You'll see a hole going to it before the throttle blade and one coming out of it after the throttle blade.
A dirty Mass air sensor (usually caused by too much oil on K&N filters) can read up to 20% lean!
Unplug the Battery for twenty minutes (or while you are cleaning should be plenty) for the computer to reset and turn off the light.
If it has a cap and rotor change those out too.
Good luck. This is cheap to fix and should go away with a little work.
