yeah start with a larger pic, it's pixelating b/c you choose a thumbnail size image for the full view to enlarge. Rather upload the full size version for it to shrink for your avatar (thumbnail) .. also, since it's a .gif make sure you give it all 256 colors and you'll be all set.
