Subject: Gen III headlight repacement

Message:
I was installing my clear corners today and decided while I was at it, to go ahead and put in my HID ultra white headlight bulbs.

After a quick inspection, it looks like about half the front end is going to have to be removed... just to access the "easy-to-replace" bulbs.

Has anyone been through this? I can't see any way to get to the bulbs without removing a whole lotta stuff (and taking HOURS to do it).

Way ta go, DC... GREAT engineering!

Small hands, huh? My fingers would have to be about the size of pipe-cleaners to get anywhere.

Ron...

Are you going to Speedzone this Saturday? Maybe you'll show me!!

Thanks, Jimmy

I didn't say I had them. Though, I can get mine down there and only rip a little skin off.

There's Speedzone this Saturday? I thought Spring Fling was gonna replace it.

These things are a B**** to replace. Not looking foward to a headlight going out. I went to switch bulbs also and it says to pull headlight assembly out, they dont pull out very easily. On both assemblies on mine 2 little guide plugs broke on mine, looks like it helps hold in the assemblies to to body of truck. Bunch of crap i think. That should be one of the easiest things to do to your truck but it isnt.

You guys are killing me. How about spending the $99.00 on a shop manual. It took me 5 minutes and a 10mm socket and presto, the headlights are out and bulbs changed. Stop torturing yourself. Let me know if you have any questions about changing your oil.

dude, the head lights are easy to replace. I have changed mine like 4 time (I have the illegal blue ones and cops love to give me fix it tickets, while looking for other things on my truck to wright me up for) go behind the light and turn the bulb 1/4 of a turn and out it comes.

I know spring fling is this weekend, I'm showing on sunday. Does anyone know if there is a meeting at speedzone on saturday (ron)? I want to check out the meeting but not if no one is going to be there.

pitcru-

where did you get your shop manual? I've looked and looked and i cant find one. And all the local shops say that Chiltons and Haynes dont have one for the '01 4.7s yet. I really want one (i'd be nice to know how to take it apart the RIGHT way). Any info would be great. Thanks.

You need to call their 800 number. They usually have and sell the manual before they get their site updated. I won't guarantee that but I bought my 2000 Dakota at the end of April, 2000, and I ordered and received my manual the first week of May, 2000.

Thanks for the number pitcru.
Are both the number you gave me, and the number i got off the techauthority site for the same manual? Im just wondering if there is any diff. between the two, i've had a couple manuals from diff. companys for my other cars, and each one had its ups and downs. It was nice to have both.

The number on the Tech Authority site is correct for sure. I think the other one is DC Customer Service, which should point you to the same place. In any case, the manual is $90. This is the Factory Service Manual which is over 2,000 pages. It is written by DC and specifically for the Dakota for a particular year. It is comprehensive and describes all pieces and parts in detail. I've had these for my various vehicles for the past 25 years and I would never substitute a Chilton's or Hayne's for a factory one. There's no comparison.

The other thing you can do, also from Tech Authority, if they're out already, is order the Diagnostic Manuals for your Dak. There are four of them and the total cost of those, all four inclusive, is $37. The Diagnostic manuals show you the tests for the various components, particularly if you have a DRB III scanner. Even if you don't you can see what you need to test for. In addition, there is more comprehensive wiring diagrams and guides including all connectors and the wires that connect to them.

The only thing these books are missing that I wish they had is part numbers for all the parts, but that's another story.
