Just thought I'd pass this on since there's been some discussion about the fuel light and gas tank size. I have a mid-year 2001 CC 4x4, SLT, etc. and have to say I didn't believe the dealer about my gas tank size (the brochures state mid-years would have a 20gal but my build sheet says 22gal).
So, I put a few gallons of gas in a 5 gal can and ran the truck until it was empty. You guessed it... filled it up with 22.3 gals (the extra .3 gals must be the filler tube).
I'm happy.

Running the tank empty is not good. When it hits E and it only takes 19 gallons to fill it up, it's because the other 3 gallons are left in there to cool the fuel pump. Once you get them hot they'll end up breaking. I had mine go out on me after i ran out of gas.

It may be true that the fuel pumps can go bad (and I don't doubt it) but people run out of gas all the time. I've been meaning to check in the owners manual about it and since my truck is still under warentee I'm not worried and why I posted the info so others won't have to replicate my test (unless you doubt your capacity). BTW, I had never put more than 18gals in this tank before and that was long after the low fuel warning light came on (which was suppose to be 1/8 tank left and why I doubted the 22 gal. capacity).

Sounds like we had trucks built pretty close together Kevin, mine was a later April, early May build and like you, I have never put anything over 19 gallons in, even when I am on E and the light has been staring me in the face for quite a while, but my build sheet does say 22 gal so I guess I'll take your and the factory's word for it!

I always run almost all gas out of every tank. I know when my Fuel light comes on I can still make it to work and back, 71 miles, and When I fill it up the most I have ever gotten in to the tank was 21.5 gallons. When I fill up it is almost alway at the same gas station and the same pump and I only let it run til it stops. I do not add anymore after it out shuts off.
I have over 50 k miles an I always drain the tank as much as possible.
I do have a 22 gallon tank.

I am usually able to squeeze in an extra $1 worth of gas into the tank after it shuts off. Try to do that when its especially cheap, could be an extra 20 miles or so.

One of these days I am gonna post my gas mileage records and how MUCH I pay for gas. I am sure that allot of you not from CA will freak out.
I'll tell you this much my per mile cost is at $.11 per mile just for gas.
