Message: I am looking at buying an '03 Quad cab, running a 4.8L, 5 speed auto trans or a 5 speed manual. Would like honest opinions about reliability of the Dodge Dakotas. Problems encountered, Dealer service, etc.
I test drove a few and love the way the truck drives and handles. Also, the way the lines flow on the Quad.
I drive a '94 Nissan pickup with 144,000 miles and not a bit of trouble from the truck, not bragging, I guess I am looking for this same sort of reliabilty out of the Dodge.
Your site kicks, lots of informative / helpful information on your site.
Hope to join the Quad family soon.
Thanks William

Message: I ordered one on 10-4 and was told it shipped to the dealer by rail on 10-27. I should have her soon.
I love the look of the Quad also and having two kids it makes it a no-brainer over a standard or clubcab. The only thing on the 2003 I didn't like is the big DAKOTA lettering on the tailgate. If they kept the 4x4 instead I would leave the stickers on...but they gotta go.
I bought the 5.9 for my Quad 4x4 so I can't say about the 4.7, but alot of mechanics I know told me to steer away from the 4.7/5spd auto due to numerous problems with that combo on the Jeeps.

Message: I've got a 2001 QC with the 5spd manual and a 4.7 - its a working truck that gets used hard, I've got 43k on it and counting, no problems with the truck except for a blown radiator, but thats because something in front of me threw a rock up that hit it.

Message: I have a '00 QC and it has been in the shop for warranty repair once a week for the past 6 weeks. It has also been in the shop alot before. Probably 20-30 times since June '00. I love the truck when it's not in the shop, but constantly being in the shop, SUCKS! I won't name all the problems but here is a few of the bigger ones: trans replaced after 16 months of arguing and nothing being done, it finally burnt up, ball joints, front brakes, all heater components, crank seal, transfer case seal, intermediate steering shaft, etc. I have to make another appointment today for the steering column popping when turning and getting a fog light replaced (3rd time) for moisture getting in and blowing the bulbs. I have always been a Dodge man, but I don't know if I would own one again. I have also seen alot of areas that Dodge cut corners on for the '02-'03 models. I definitely wouldn't buy a new Dakota. May consider the Ram. Just my opinion, though. Hope you have good luck if you get a Dakota.

Message: I have a 2002 QC, 4x4, 4.7, auto, 3.92 LSD. I just turned 15000 miles. No significant problems. The truck has a great combination of passenger hauling and cargo hauling capability. The 4.7 is a great engine and the 45RFE tranny is well behaved - it is always eager to downshift and let the 4.7 rev.
I was in a similar situation as you. I previously had a 90 Toyota 4x4 with 186K on it that was nearly bullet proof. The Toyota Taco Doublecab was just too small, the Nissan Frontier was even smaller, and the F-150 SuperCrew was too expensive. The Dakota QC had the right balance of size, V-8 power, and price.

Message: Troy:
I would replace it. It has all the symptoms of a factory lemon you know the one they get every so many cars produced. Mine is a 00 QC 4x4 4.7L Auto with 33,000 miles on it. I bought it used with 23,000 and yesterday was her 10,000 mile birthday with me. No problems at all. The engine still looks like new with no leaks anywhere or strange noises. The only problem that it has, I induced it when I reposition the IAT but it only hesitates in the fresh mornings for a couple of seconds. Like William, I used to drive a very reliable MAZDA pickup but with what the Dakota has shown me, I don't miss it at all! SO GO FOR IT WILLIAM!! You won't regret it!

Message: My 2002 QC 4.7 auto, LSD just turned a year old with 10,300 miles. I have been happy with the truck except for fuel consumption - I get 18 on the highway and 13 around town. It's been in the shop for oil changes and a drivers door adjustment. Paint quality is not great - very thin. But for a family vehicle that can still be used for work - nothing beats it yet.
