Subject: Leaky NV3500 after switched to Synthetic IP: Logged
Message: Hey gang,
After switching the tranny fluid to synthetic about 3 months ago. I've notice that the tranny is dripping fluid where it mounts to the engine. It only drips once in a blue moon, one or two drips here and there. But today it looks like it driped a good 10-15 times enough to form a very small puddel. This can't be normal?? Has anyone else experienced any leakage from their nv3500-5spd???
Thanks in advance,
Anthony

Message: Synthetic's will not cause seal damage at all. They have not done that since the early 1970's. What can happen is the convetional oil can leave waxy sludge like build up on the seal causeing it to dry rot. Once you but a synthetic in that has no wax in it it will disolve the soft wax pluging all the dry roted cracks in the seal. Then it starts to leak. So the leak was not caused buy the synthetic but rather by the crappy non-synthetic that was in it before. Their is also the possability that it had nothing to do with the fluid change at all. It could have been defective and failing already and it just finaly went after fluid change. Sometimes we try to make cause and effect relationships were one does not exsist. You could try Lucas tranny stop leak in it. It has seal swelling chemical in it. It will make the seal soften up and swell. If that does not do it then you will need to drop the trany and change out the seal.

Message: When I changed my oil in the NV3500,I noticed there was slight seapage between the tailshaft housing and main trans casing and also from the transfer case halfs and all this was before I switched to SYN oils,I dont see mine getting any worse after the SYN oils either,so I doubt the change caused your leak, are you sure its the trans fluid? Could be the rear main from the engine leaking.

Message: It could also be the clutch slave cylinder leaking as well. Just a thought.

Message: Here's a pic where the leak is coming from, I think it's leaking higher up and dripping down the tranny. Last night their was no drips on the cardboard I placed under the truck, and so far today I didn't see anymore. It's very weird!!

Message: Check your valve covers Anthony, hard to tell if its from the engine or trans as they are both pretty much the same oil

Message: A leaky Distributor O-ring did that for me-- check that too-- Clean EVERYTHING real good-- then keep checking it-- It's probably engine related (as listed above).

Message: It been 2 days since it last dripped and counting, but I must know what it is. I just went under the truck to get a better look. The leak is coming from between the engine and tranny where the flywheel is. I opened the fill cap on the nv-3500, to see if it's still full. Fluid was streaming out of the hole, plus the tranny fluid was so clean it was like I just put it in.
Synthetic rules!!! it's still clean after 6,000km!!! So that rules out the tranny leaking.
So I guess this is an engine oil leak. What I dont get the drips look like dirty oil as shown in pic, I changed my oil last weekend and the oil is clean!?!?! I got my eye on it from now on!!!

Message: I would put some dye in the crank case and get the black light out. That would answere it real quick like. The oil abears to have combustion by products in it. I would guess that either your valve covers are leaking or the rear main is!!! You can smell the oil and if it has a gasoline odor you know it came from the crankcase. Does the NV3500 have an inspecton plate??? If it does remove it and take a peak. I would also completely was the engine and trany down with engine cleaner before adding dye. It is always easier to find a leak with a clean engine!

Message: Hey Ryan,
After closer inspection it's not the tranny, the main oil seal on the engine is shot. What a piss off, now the dealer is going to have to rip the bottom of the motor apart plus remove the tranny. Just to fix it.
I recommend switching the tranny fluid to synthetic. Big difference, you'll see!!!
