Ok. Latley I have been hearing alot of comments about how Dodge Dakota transmissions go bad after awhile. Can anyone give me some clarity on this subject, because it seems that I have heard this from anyone when I talk about Dakotas. Thanks

I have a 2000 QC 4x4 5.9L and I just got it out of the shop Friday for a burned up transmission. The shop said the pump was welded to the torque converter. It had been acting up for over a year, and they wouldn't fix it. It finally burnt completely up. It had 32,000 miles on it.

Try google search in alt.auto.dodge.trucks. I did and it seems there are plenty of problems with the electronic overdrive (4th gear) in dakotas. I have a 1990 3.9L with only 60,000 miles and overdrive has been working intermittantly for the last 10k. I have not found a specific fix though, solutions range from low batt voltage to complete rebuild.

Goto allpar.com and read their section on 4 speed auto transmissions. The majority of the time when problems occour it is due to negligence on the owners part (or even a mechanic) by using the wrong transmission fluid, or adding an additive to Dexron or something. Dodge transmissions are very sensitive to fluid. Another problem most people tag as needing a rebuild or major work could have been corrected by flashing the pcm, or something as simple as a $15 solinoid.

Curtis, I'm assuming you are refering to the auto.

I have a 01, 4.7L, 5spd manual, and wouldn't have anything else. They're not without problems either however. Mine is in the shop today b/c it won't go into third with or without grinding on a semi-fast shift, as accelerating to enter the highway.

Troy, what happened to 3/36? I'd talk to D/C, they can't do that, can they?

Well, from the above post, called the service writer, they said they had to order a part for my tranny, would be in and fixed tomorrow. I asked what part, and he said he didn't ask, they said they'd replace the fluid also. tomorrow, hope so, Saturday we're doing the Ho cams, two trucks at once.

42RE,

Is replacing the solenoid pack within the reach of a home mechanic? I have rebuilt a couple of engines and once a manual tranny on a motorcycle. My Haynes repair manual only talks about adjusting the bands so I have no reference where or what the solenoid is.

Thanks

DODGE does not have anymore problems then GM or Ford. Type in 4L60 or 4L60E and see what pops up or try 700R4. The big three have a history of short changeing truck buyers with garbage automatics. The only two that are realy good are the 4L80E and the Alison. The 45RFE is very similar to GM's 4L80E in design. So far I like my 45RFE trans just fine but only time will tell! Most people do not service their transmission fluid as they should or even worse they tow in over drive. Lack of maintence is the number one cause of trany failures. Changeing fluid and filters every twenty thousand miles seems like cheap insurance to me. I changed my fluid and filter at 10,000 miles intialy and when it hits 30,000 I will do it again. Use Redline Synthetic C+ ATF or Amsoil Synthetic ATF!!!!!!!

Team Fast,

The only mods they'd see on mine are a home brew air intake, and if they looked hard enough, a concealed AiT adjuster, hidden real well though. I have no belt fan, shouldn't matter either though. I did the HO cams this last weekend, and I know they can't tell about ths mod either. I say go for it, what have you got to lose?

I guess you saw that I have the 5spd, manual that is. I think many of these type of mods have more influence on the auto. Good or bad.

I have not yet heard of it. I just checked and found no DC service bulletins for transmission concerns of any kind on 2005 Dakotas. Which transmission does your have (45RFE/545RFE or 42RLE)?

I too have a problem with my 01 QC 4x4 auto. I have a very harsh first to second shift. It is really noticable when taking off slowly from a stop or when I take off hard and then let off of the gas. Almost feels like I get rear ended. I am afraid that this much sudden torque on the driveline will lead to more complicated problems. Dodge said no bad codes came up on the computer and all fluid pressure tests are O.K. Any input?
