Subject: Solved annoying exhaust rattle... IP: Logged
Message: After I installed my GIBSON single swept side exhaust on my '00 3.9 CC i noticed an annoying rattle starting at about 4000 RPM. It made my truck sound like crap. After posting about it and reading this board i figured it must be a loose or vibrating heat shield.
Today i set out to solve this annoyance:
here was the problem, It was the Stainless Exhaust tip that caused the rattle. No it was not loose or anything silly like that. When installing the tip there really was no guidance from GIBSON so i figured i could pretty much put it on however i wanted as long as there was at least an inch or so clearance from the truck. So i put it on the way i liked it. Turns out there was too much overlap, meaning the actual pipe extended too far into the tip (past the clamp area) this is what caused the rattle. So i experimented a little and found that if the pipe extends more then about an inch past the "clamp area" (into the flared section) it will rattle around 4000 RPM. Less then an inch no rattle all the way to redline. (my neighbors now really think I'm crazy)
Try this easy fix before messing with the heat shields.
It sticks out a little more then i like now so i may go to a muffler shop and have the pipe cut a little.
Good luck hope this helps
