Subject: AC Stops Blowing Cold Air After a while IP: Logged
Message: '98 Dak. SLT CC w/ 5.2 V8, When first starting up, blower on full AC set to MAX, plenty of cold air from all vents, and lots of water dripping on the pavement.. After driving for 45 minutes to an hour it starts warming up in the cab and the air flow slows way down.. It feels like most of the air is blown, warm, back down on the passengers feet area...
Leave it sit for an hour or so, get in, start up and presto much cold air again.
Don't know about dealers and haven't met an honest AC-repair tech.. We're at their mercy when we say fix it.. Any Tips before the old $700.00 evap needs to be replaced, along with that the dryer, freon, dye, and oil... trip to the ac repair shop.

Message: Sounds like your Evaporator is freezing up.
You don't have to have your A/C set to Max all the time your driving. It really cool's better if you leave your blower motor on Med or Low. The only time you use Max is if is extreamly HOT in the Vehicle when you first get in. Then you use MAX until the vehicle is cool inside then set the blower motor to Med or Low.
There are 2 types of A/C Compressors some cycle some don't. The one's on Dakotas cycle on and off.
You have a sensor that tell's the compressor when to cycle on and off.
If the compressor doesn't cycle when the clutch on the compressor is in guaged then it will cause the water on the evap to freeze instead of letting the water run off. Which is what you see driping on the ground.
ALSO! If your A/C system is over charged it will also cause this problem. Under charged and it will cycle fast, or not at all.
That's about it in a nut shell
Hope I helped........

Message: JRM is right, your evap is icing. Probably a defective clutch cycling switch. Pop the hood, look for the accumulator on the passenger side at the firewall. Its the large metal can approx. 3.5" in diameter and 10-12" tall. On the top you will see the switch. Disconnect the terminal and remove the switch by turning it counter-clockwise. The switch port has a valve core in it, you don't need to recover the charge to remove the switch. Once removed, check for continuity across the two terminals. If present, the switch is bad. Should be able to get a new one from Autozone.
Some facts:
1) There is only one compressor type for all Dakotas, Rams and Durangos regardless of year model. Variations are in mounting, oil charge, etc... Internal design is the same for all.
2) There are two basic system types.
3) They both cycle the compressor, just by different means.

Message: Yes there is only one type compressor for the Dakota and Dodge in general.
But there are 2 Different A/C Compressors out there on vehicles.
One looks like what is on the Dakota. The other compressor is not as long it is usualy short and really round.
One is a cycling clutch type, where the clutch cycles by enguaging and disinguaging, and the piston or piston's do not vary there stroke.
The other is Varable type compressor the clutch stay's enguaged all the time and each of the pistons inside varies there stroke depending on output pressure of the compressor.
That's what I ment by 2 different compressors.

Message: More info for you:
N, AN, DN, BR, DR bodies with 3.9, 5.2, 4.7 and 5.9 use the Sanden SD wobble plate compressor.
JA, JR, AB bodies use the Sanden TR scroll.
P, PT, NS, LH, LHS bodies use the Denso 10P swash plate compressor.
The DR with the new 5.7 also uses a Denso, haven't seen which type.
The variable you're referring to was the Denso 6C17 that was used only on the S van years ago but replaced by the 10P when they restyled to the NS. DCX ditched it because of reliability issues.
Three types in current production that I'm aware of.

Message: Good call.
Alot of great info but is all that what your talking about nothing but Dodge?
Because I was talking about A/C compressors in general on all vehicles not just dodge.
Not trying to confuse anyone at all which I was making clear in earlyer post's about there being other compressors out there than just on Dodge Vehicles.
Just trying to throw a little more info out there that's all.
If I did confuse anyone my bad..............

Message: Lab Rat are you sure about taking out the switch without having to recover the freon? I heard other wise in this forum and also in "haynes" car manual. Mine is a 00 Dak Q Cab 4.7L. I wonder if there is more than one type of dryer for the different year models?

Message: Yes, unless they screwed up and didn't install the Schrader core in the fitting when the accumulator was made. We "hot swap" them frequently.
GenI daks were TXV, no switch on drier.
GenII went to CCOT, suction accumulator from supplier "A". Black steel can.
GenIII also CCOT, aluminum can from suppler "B".
Just an FYI, no trying to be a butt, the name Freon went out with R-12. DuPont trademark for 12 and 22.

Message: Thank you for the info. I was afraid to replace it so I just disconected it and bridged the conector to have continuos air. About the freon is just common term (lingo). At least I didn't say anti-frezze like a lot of people down here refer to it. (I used to work at the automotive dept. at Wal-mat that how I know).

Message: Guys, thanks for all the info, and it is good info, and probably a correct diagnosis of the problem, but now I'm a little confused..
I looked last weekend and you are right on.. there is a large metal can, black, hanging on the firewall, there is also a device, I assume this is the clutch cycling switch. Its a '98 Dav 5,2 V8 and I call it a Gen III.
I was ready to go in this weekend and yank the switch, ohm it out, and replace it if shorted..
Now I'm not so sure I want to pull it if there is a chance of dumping the gaseous substance generally referred to as Freon, but should never be confused with anit-freeze.
Will there be a long pssss..., when I remove the switch ?

Message: You'll get nothing more than a little "ffff" if you unscrew it quickly. Have the new one in hand in case the valve core isn't 100% seated (you may get a small hiss while the switch is off, nothing to worry about).

And then after leaving it on and continue driving it pops back on after 30 or so minutes, blows nice cold air aaah and after 5 minutes off again. I had the dealer look at it and they can't figure it out... they think it might me the magnetic plate what ever that is? HELP it's summer time and my truck is black

Message: We still have the problem... after running the AC for 45 minutes or so, less cold air flows from the drivers side vents, and thenn less and less form all the vents.. If ya put the fan on hi and then feel around the passenger feet area of teh air box you can feel cold air.. After shtuuing the AC off or the Dak down for an hour or so and then crank it up or back on there is cold air.
Replaced the clutch cycle switch, on top of the accumulator, but this did not help..
Aslo have not had a technically qualified AC person look at it.. But I am rather positive the Evaporator, the radiator like device neatly installed inside the air box, is freezing up into an ice block. When this happens in your house unit it is either because the air filter is clogged up or dirt has clogged the Evaproator in the air-handler restricting air flow through the coils causing the condensation to freeze on the evaporator.

Message: I found out that the only time my AC freezes is when I select the setting that trows air from the front and from the bottom. And that is because in this specific setting, the air is pulled from the outside. on the other settings like the AC* or AC MAX*, the air is beign recycled therefore re-cooling only dry air. So if its humid outside, your condensor is going to freeze all that water in the air and form ice on the panel, restricting the passage of air through it.

Message: tekmon,
I had a similiar problem that my a/c would start out cold and then slowly change to hot. I was right in the middle of installing a Black Magic 150 fan and hadn't made all the connections yet. My a/c would do what yours is doing when the fan wasn't running (pulling air thru the radiator. If you have an auxiliary electric fan, you might want to check to see if it's working.

Message: I have a '99 Dakota ext. cab, 3.9 L V-6.
The AC air flow will shut off under hard accelleration. It's especially annoying when pulling my 5th wheel uphill.
A friend told me that this is a malfunctioning electronic relay or valve that controls that. He said that someone else he knew had the same problem, but does not know what this gadget is called or exactly where it is. He said it's somewhere under the dashboard.
Does anybody out there know what this thing is called, part number, and where it's located?
