 Subject: Computer meltdown, beware!

Just want to inform you all. I Went out to my truck, it cranked over but that is all it would do. Had the "no bus" message in the odom. window. Had my truck towed to the dealer. Dealer followed the flow chart, PCM they say. Two PCMs later they say maybe not. Dodge tech from detroit brought in to help the dealership to figure it out. After not having my truck for two weeks they figure it out, the crankshaft sensor is frying the PCMs. End result: I pay $280 for the sensor, they cover the PCM (have too, federal law 80,000 or 8 years)and 2mpg more then what I was getting before all of this. I know the gas milage doesnt make sence, I dont know what to tell you all.

I don't get it. If they're covering the PCM under warranty they should cover the sensor as well. Did you modify the sensor??

Same problem happend to my 99 5.2L but just replacing the crank sensor fixed it. I hope it will be fine now. Kinda makes me feel nervous about this problem. Thanks for the heads up. What actually happend to your crank sensor did the magnet break, wiring problem or what. I forget to ask the dealer what happend to mine.

Lab Rat-As for the reason the PCM is cover and not the sensor, thats all the Federal law requires. It comes down to being an EPA issue. Anyone else out there know why the PCM is covered and not the crankshaft sensor? Understand that my truck (63,000miles) is not under warrenty anymore, this is a Federal requirment of all auto makers, Hope that clears it up some.
Homer.s.-I asked for the part, it looks fine to me, it sites on my countertop as a paper weight. They seemed to think this is a fluke, they didnt like all the time wasted on trackng down the problem. It was amazing the attitude change once that DC got involve. Anyway hope this helps.

Just a WAG, but if the Feds require the Catalytics and other parts related directly to emissions, be covered under warranty for minimum 5-7 years, and the PCM actually controls the Emissions through timing, spark advance etc. could this be the reason they are required to warranty it also? As part of the Emissions package? Like I said just a WAG.......Nottie

Yes that is the reason that the computer is covered under warranty.

My crank sensor went bad , and it was fixed under warrante , but I had less than 10,000 miles on it.
