Subject: Auto or manual? IP: Logged
Message: I have been driving for a short time now(5 months) and am going to buy a newer Dakota at the end of this year. I now own a 93 4x4 Dakota w/318, 4spd(O/D) tranny. People have told me that if I get a two wheel drive and make it a "hot rod", I would be a fool to get an auto tranny, is this true? Getting a manual means learning to drive stick which almost everyone I know drives and they say it is so simple, but my experiences say diiferent. I have also ben told that for everyday, stop-and-go traffic, a manual tranny is not to great. Is learning to drive stick as easy as they say and more importantly, can I get better performance from a V8 with one?

Message: In today's vehicles it's a matter of personal preference. The automatic transmission for the 4.7 engine is controlled by a separate computer. You would be surprised how efficient the shifting can be on that tranny without having to buy a shift kit for it. As a matter of fact the TCM (tranny computer) will learn to shift based on your driving habits.

Message: Andrew, it is all personal preference. I prefer a stick but a lot of high torque cars (or trucks like the Lightning) only come in automatic.

Message: They're right... it's truly a matter of preference. The "multi-speed" automatic is very capable (I rented one for a week). Yeah, I would love to have the 5-speed with the 4.7, but - alas - I live in Southern California, and bumper-to-bumper traffic is a hideous reality for me, so I "settled" for the auto. Oh, well..... at least the "multi-speed" doesn't force upshifts on me at 3,000 RPM like my Chevy 700R4 did, even under full throttle.

Message: 5 speed gives you an other dimention of contol over your truck. Once you get good which wont take that long. YOu will get better milage then an auto and more preformace. Traffic can be a problem but you get used to it.
