Subject: how long did your brakes last? IP: Logged
Message: Hey,
I was just wondering how long the front brakes lasted for everyone before they needed to change them. I have a little over 10,000 miles on my Dak now and it sounds like they need to be changed, I am going to check this when I get a chance.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Message: Be careful with these brakes! Mine were making the squeaking noise around 10,000 miles, and when I went to the dealership about it, they gave me a bullitin letting me know it was "normal" for them to squeak due to the lining no longer containing asbestos in them. I went about 4 years on them, when suddenly the rotors started crunching, and it was already too late (rotors were shot). I had assumed that the brake squeaking going on was normal as usual, but they had gone from the "normal" squeaking to one indicating they were worn out. When in doubt, check them out because the rotors cost a fortune.

Message: I had to get my rotors and drums turned at around 23,000 miles. From what I have read, these discs usually only get one turn out of them before you need to replace them. Next time I will probably go with some cross drilled.

Message: Coming up on 35,000 miles, brakes still look new and no pulsating. I don't baby the trick either. Repeating a question someone else recently asked on one of these brake questions "what are you guy's doing to your trucks to cause the brakes to wear so fast." My only guess is driving with two feet has become very popular.

Message: I have never driven my truck with two feet and like I said earlier, mine needed turned at 23,000 miles. I always get out the torque wrench when I rotate tires so I know that isn't the problem. Just cheap brakes I guess.

Message: I bought my 2000 QC used with 27,000 miles. The dealer changed the front pads and roters on his own before delivering the vehicle to me. For a used car dealer to incur this expense, I have to assume that the brakes were shot - possibly wouldn't pass the state inspection.

Message: It must be a misconception because you can turn the rotors and not replace the pads. My last truck had 30,000 on it and they were maybe worn half down on the pads. Had to turn the rotors and drums though.

I didn't even bother the dealer as even if they were to replace the parts, why would I put crap back on?

Message: A recent long term road test concerning 3
BMW (3, 5, 7 series I think) here in
switzerland showed that all three cars had
their rotors changed during the first 25-28000
miles and one had them changed twice in
less than 6000 miles. So this might be not
only a dodge problem. What the story didn't
say is if the dealers told their customers that
was "normal" :)
Another think to consider with brake warping
is the trans. meaning that auto put more
stress on the brakes than manual (no motor
braking).

Message: I bought a '98 Durango at 90,000 and the dealership I bought it from put new pads and rotors on at my request because they pulsated on the test drive. At 95,000 the brakes pulsated again and I had the rotors and drums turned and kept the pads and shoes on because they looked really good. They were great after that. At 100,000 miles they are starting to pulsate again and I don't ride my brakes or brake hard. I'm guessing cheap front brake pads are warping the rotors.

Message: oh man I'm so pissed about my setup right now, I'm on all stock rotors/pads.. the trucks seen a few sets of pads but she started squeeling like a pig on fresh pads a few weeks ago so I had the rotors turned ... 72 hours later it's sqeeling like a pig again! I was thinking about going w/ powerslots and some decent pads but I'm reading that the powerslots cracked on a bunch of people and they weren't replaced so I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I hate it to because I have a 00' R/T and when I pull up to a stoplight or sign and it SQUEEEELS so loud that people look at me like "what an idiot, he's got exhaust work done and who knows what else but he's so dumb he's letting his feelers chew right into his rotors" when in all reality I'm sitting on new pads and crap chrysler rotors. Any advice???

Message: Tim98Durango, one of the main reasons that the brake pedal pulsates is because the "mechanic", that works on your truck, overtightens the lug nuts when reinstalling the tires. This distorts the rotors and you will get the pulsation. Always ask them to use a torque wrench (preferred) or torque stick on the impact wrench. When you get it home check it yourself. 100 ft. lbs. is in the middle of the recommended range.

Message: The American name plates are all haveing this issue. They all shut down their own foudrys to save money. They all outsource to the same crappy dirt floor fooundry down south. I would not let thim cast me a cannon ball. They are pouring organge metal(wrong temp) not letting them cool properly and useing cheaper iron then spec.......... THe chinesse are makeing a better rotor which is sad!! All you have to do is check the quality of iron which is easy to do and check the temp at the pour station not at the cupola. It cools on the way from the cupola to the pouring stations. If it is not at right temp then the rotors will be worthless!
