Subject: weatherstrip leak by drivers door IP: Logged
Message: Dear DD.Com:
I solved a unusual problem on my '95 Dakota Sport. I had occasional water leaks on the drivers' side along the running board, right where the running board meets the kick panel.
I finally found the culprit - the door frame weatherstripping has small holes in it, I'm not sure what for, but they are there every few inches.
Along the vertical part of the front of my cab the holes are facing forward - this is also along the side of the windshield. At the bottom of the cab along the kick plate, the holes are on top and facing in.
As I drove, water would flow down the seam between my door and the cab and water would run in the holes along the window and front of door, and then come inside the cab along the floor, right at carpet level.
I finally figured this out when I started using Rain-X windshield washer fluid. This stuff has a strong smell, and I noticed that when I washed the windshield at high-speed I got a real strong smell in the cab. I had the AC on and the vent set to recirculate so it was not outside air.
I think the outside air is under more pressure than inside air and it was forcing the fluid inside.
I solved the problem using some clear silicone sealer and plugged the holes, leaving the door open until it completely cured. I took the bulb out of the inside light so it wouldn't drain the battery while the door was open.
Hope this helps somoene!
