Subject: Brake Rotors

How long do brake rotors typically last for everyone else out there? I had to get new ones in the fall of 2000 and now less than 2 years later Midas is telling me I need new ones again. I don't really consider my driving style to be rough on brakes so I'm just wondering if this is typical. So what do you all think, is Midas selling crappy rotors or are they just trying to take me for some cash.

probly both, do you feel any pulsation, or do they look like there chewed up? Do they squeak?

If no to the above, don't waste your money
if so just go to auto zone I think they have a life time rotor (I think, don't hold me to that)

I have 17,500 on my 2002 with no problems, (80% highway) and I babied them for the first 1,000 miles

Just put on front rotors, 97K on a 98 sport/rc. Not to be too sarcastic, but if u would learn a little bout doing simple sh1t like (brakes)that for urself then u proly wouldn't have some joker makin money from you every time u bring ur vehicle around.,bring it to me I'll change ur rotors and pads every 20K if you'll buy it.

P.s> advanced auto- wearever rotors 26 bucks each, wearever gold pads 18 bucks, pint brake fluid 2 and 1/2 bucks all with a lifetime warranty,time-1 houre 1 and 1/2 if you paint the calipers ur favorite color like me. duno, I went 97k on mine then the pads wore so thin the rivets where eatin into the rotors. Replaced it all the next day for less than 100 bucks and I'll prolly go aother 70-80K who knows.

Thanks for the reply and yes they are pulsating at certain braking speeds thats why I took the truck in and I figured it was about time to get a new set of Midas' lifetime warranty brake pads.

You're info is also appreciated but you can drop the sarcastic attitude, it's really unneeded for such a simple question. And by the way I'm not the joker next door who gets taken by quick lube oil changes and $70 an hour dealer service charges. I have just never had experience with dealing with brakes. I got my brakes done at Midas the first time because my brake pads wore through to the rotor and I'm two hours away from the free use of my dads tools. I took it back this time because Midas has a lifetime warranty on the pads. And for your info I called Midas and told them not to do any work on my truck long before I received your reply.

I think I'll stop by advanced auto today and save myself a couple hundred:)

My 87 Dakota had 120,000 on them and never been turned. My 95 have been warped ever sence I had it.Had them turn twice still warped. Rotated my tire the other day, torked the wheels to 100 lbs.
haven't had any trouble sence.

In my opinion, the key to getting the rotors to stop warping is to torque the wheels properly anytime they are taken off. Since the rotors are not held in place on their own, the wheel can easily warp the rotor. So the next time you have the whhels off (to rotate the tires for example) make sure to torque the lugnuts to between 100-110 ft lbs. It was the cure for my brake troubles.
ps-all it takes to change the rotors yourself is some elbow grease and a 7mm hex bit.

Just to add some more info. to this post, I had both my front and rear brakes (front discs, rear drums) turned at around 23,000 miles and that fixed my pulsation/shaking problem. I am thinking of going with a rear disc conversion kit when I need new brakes. I do a lot of towing and some have said that the rear disc kit helps a bunch. NOt sure I want to spend 800 bucks on it though!

Thanks again for all the replies guys. Went to advanced auto last night and bought some pads and rotors. Going home from college this weekend to change them out.

Both times I have had brake problems I have asked the midas guys to turn the rotors but i always get the same answer that they're worn below the limit. I would think rotors should be able to be turned at least once especially when the pulsating is not that bad and started not that long ago.

Bill.... I have taken the plunge and purchased the "Praise Dyno Brake" Stage I package for my 97 Dak. This has been talked up extensively by the mags (mainly the muscle car mags for their 4-wheel drum package) that includes a set of semi-kevlar front disk pads and rear shoes, plus springs, etc. for the back. Reports are that with this package, you don't need to convert to rear disks. I'm gonna do the install this weekend and I'll be sure to report back with the results. This package wasn't cheap ($245 shipped) so I hope lives up to the hype and eliminates the massive brake dusting as well as improve my brake feel and performance.

On my 04 Quad Cab 4x4, the first set lasted 7800. miles. The second set of factory replacements started shaking the steering wheel at 12000 miles but I tolerated it until 45000. At that point I went to Raybestos rotors and Bendix titaniumetallic 2 pads and haven't had a problem since in 6000 miles of hard use and abuse. That is the combo I recommend. You'll have dust but they'll last awhile without squealing and the rotors will hold up fine.

I have a 02 Dakota Quad 4X4. After the first 5000+/- miles, the brakes started to pulsate. Took it to the dealer and they said that the brakes got overheated and the the rotors were warped and they wanted $1200. to fix them problem. They also stated that there was no safety issues if I chose to leave them as is. At that point I had gone beyond the time frame of the warranty.

At 14000 I could no lnger stand the problem and took it in and they turned the rotors and told me that the brake pads were 10/32. This past weekend at 16000 the caliper on the front right tire locked. Tried of the Dodge guys, I took it to an Indepentent and he replaced the front rotors, calipers and pads. He also found that the master cylinder was failing. I test drove it and the brakes felt like the pedal was going to go thru the floor, nothing was there. He is putting in a new master cylinder.

This sounds very similar to some of the other messages listed. Thanks for listening Bob

My 2004 Dakota began showing the same problems listed here at about 12K miles. Rotors were shot. The dealer replaced and the truck drove like a new one. This lasted about 14K miles and once again the rotors warped. Hard to believe that after 26K miles I had already gone through 2 sets of rotors. I dont ride or break hard so I know that the rotors shouldnt have overheated. I am not going to replace with factors but instead am looking at after market rotors. Not sure if I want slotted or drilled. Anyone with experience with either please guide me in the right direction.

A few thousand miles ago I finally put another set of rotors on my 2000 QC. Bought them at Pep Boys - basic replacements.It had been warped for a while. After a few thousand miles I took the truck back for squeeling and a littel pulsating. Pep Boys checked them out and found undue wear and cracking and replaced them under warrenty with ceramic pads and slotted rotors (Kudos to Pep Boys). Now maybe 10-15K later they are pulsating significantly. No real serious use other thatn daily driving - will take them back soon and hope they can at least be turned...

Disc brake problems are often very poorly understood. Spend some time and do some research through Google and you'll learn some interesting things. Here's some examples:

Ceramic pads don't work any better than standard pads, and worse than many aftermarket pads. Shops don't put them on to do you a favor. People often return to a shop because their new disc brakes squeal. That wastes a lot of the shops time and money getting them to quiet down. And it causes a lot of yelling and screaming in the waiting area. Ceramic pads squeal, but at such a high frequency you can't hear it. So you don't come back. They do it for their benifit, not yours.

Warped rotors are really not very common with today's materials. But material deposit on the rotor from improper bedding in is very common. Interestingly enough, the symptoms are essentially the same. The only way to tell if they are warped is to use a dial indicater, NOT a micrometer.

Slotted and drilled rotors will not last as long as solid rotors. And they do not work as well, either.

Do your home work before spending any money.

I've spent the last 3 months studying and documenting our braking systems quite extensively and have come up with a cure that will work for most with 16" rims. It was a tedious process, though with a shopping list (which I'll be giving you all shortly) it will be quite painless.

First of all, quit trying to fix the stoopid single piston caliper system. I've tried and it's a waste of time/money, they just suhck, and are FAR underrated for the truck they're on.

03 Durango brakes, from the knuckle-out are the answer. Shares the same huge dual piston caliper as an 03 RAM. Everything's a direct bolt-in. And after seeing the detailed comparison between the two different designs, you'll agree that dakota brakes are f'ing dangerous. I'm not sure I'll get an argument from anyone outta THAT one!

Cost me less than 350 bux, a day's worth of elbow grease and now my 01 dakota 4x4 stops as good as a small car with high performance brakes. I'm about 3 weeks running the setup and the truck actually feels much lighter when braking. It's staggering how quick it buckles down from 80.

I've documented everything, with some nice pics, parts list and torque figures... it'll be another week or so before it's published. Not sure I want to use any of my own webservers, as it could get popular pretty quick i'm thinking. :O)
