Subject: exh manifold studs - BROKEN! HELP? IP: Logged
Message: first, i admit, i have had a ton of issues with my 98 dakota and i'm at the breaking point, this close ot trading it in!
Anyone who can help, suggest, etc -please do!
here goes:
i get in truck today, funny popping when i turn left - i get back home and lift hood, drvr side heat shield off of exh manifold is laying on the steering shaft. i think no big deal, and then i look closer! 2 studs on the head broke off, of the 4, and these are for the back 2 cylinders (the frt port has 2 studs) oh my god! Cheap material or what? 65k on the truck, i'm furious! I call THE DEALER, THEY'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS, sorry -its your baby the warranty is up.
These are really tight to get too, anyone else experience thisw? i'm afraid to even drive the truck in fear of the frt 2 studs breaking off too! ruined my day, let me tel ya, don;t know how i'm gonna get to work monday, etc. %^&*!
anyone help?

Message: NAPA? You could get bolts instead. NAPA sells a nice easyout set, but i would be somewhat worried about accidently drilling into the head. Someone on here once said they tack-welded a nut onto a broken stud and then backed it out. That might work for you.

Message: There have been a number of posts in this forum regarding broken exhaust manifold studs. Most folks have had to end up drilling the broken stud out, as EZ outs have not seemed to work...one person said that they had to remove the fender liner to get a straight shot at it. Personally, I don't know how in the heck one would go about a job such as that, given the clearances and angles that one has to deal with where the manifold attaches to the head...it'd be a monumental PIA any way you look at it, I think. This is one reason why I'm considering putting headers on my truck while it's still new...as much a preventative maintenance issue as a performance one! I for sure don't want to have to be drilling out manifold studs 3 years from now...
As for the dealers, it seems like just about every problem that seems common to people who visit this website is "new" to the dealers. It seems like we usually know more about the problems that plague our trucks than the dealer service departments do! I think that if I were a service manager, I'd make this forum required reading for my techs...and the engineers at DC!!

Message: Pistolero,
You are assuming that all service techs can read. Some can, they do frequint this Forum. Most can't and Service Writers only know whats in that darn computer they beat on all day. :(
Good Luck Rob,
