Subject: Changing Diff Oil ?? IP: Logged
Message: I know this has been asked already but I cant find the answer I m looking for in the search. I have a 2001 QC and am finally doing the front and rear diff fluid. I wanted to know how much oil is used in each and how do I know if I need the limited slip additive ? I bought 4 bottles of Mobil 1 synthetic. Is this good ? Also does anyone know the torqe specs ? Lots of questions I know, I know. Thanks

Message: I just changed my rear diff fluid yesterday actually. Clean up the rear dif case with a razor (well, I did this anyways) to ensure a good seal with the new RTV (I have heard you can also get a gasket). I used 2 quarts of Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic gear lube. To be honest it takes a little more then 2 quarts (for me anyways) but 2 quarts will put you right around the correct level mark, good luck, im not sure if I answered any of your questions or not- also I have a '97 2wd Dakota so I cant tell you anything regarding the front.

Message: As for torque specs- go around tightening the bolts in a star pattern as to not warp the case, snug them all up and then what I did was use my own judgement (tighten them down fairly well but not so much as to break the bolt). I realize this problably isnt much help to you, im sure others will chime in.

Message: Take that Mobil1 back and get a refund and buy the Amsoil series 2000 75w-90 Racing Gear Lube and you can forget about having to add the friction modifier.
A friction modifier simply makes gear oil more slippery and with the Amsoil it is not needed due to the fact that it is slippery enough by design.

Prospector is RIGHT...
I've been using Amsoil ATF for years and years, no friction modifiers required. Up and Down and Up and Down and Up and Down ... hills and mountains. And I work construction hauling and pulling heavy loads all day with never a problem.

Bri,
Whatever Differential Fluid you choose here is helpful information:
-------------------------------------------------
Helpful Differential Recommendations:
-Flush (drain) as much of the old fluid out.
-Differential fluid capacity depends on ring gear and axle housing size.
-Do not over/under fill differential. This could mean a capacity difference of a quart or more and may cause overheating problems. (See the owner’s manual for proper fill level)
AMSOIL gear oils are formulated with friction modifiers for limited slip differential applications. There is no need to add limited slip or additional additives. If you choose a different manufacturer than Amsoil ... fine by me, just offering my services.
-After changing the differential fluid, drive the vehicle in 7 or 8 figure eight turns, so the new lubricant can work its way into the axle assembly.
Synthetics provide the long-lasting protection, fuel efficiency and dependability needed for top performance, even extreme-pressure conditions. Stays fluid in cold temperatures for easy cold-weather shifting.
----------------------
P. S. Amsoil Series 2000 75w-90 is excellent for use in passenger cars and trucks requiring a GL-5 gear lube, including those with limited slip differentials.
