Message: “Check Engine” light glows wild today – 1999 5.9. What the…??? 79K, oil, tranny fluid, all the basics – ok. Runs great. We talking a dumb “oxygen sensor” here? Any and all inputs appreciated. – Jim.

Message: I believe it's the 98+'s you can pull the codes from the PCM by doing the following:
Put the Key in the ignition
Turn the key to the "Run" position
Move back to the "On" Position
Turn the key to the "Run position
Move back to the "On" position
Turn the key to the "Run position
Move back to the "On" position
The codes will appear in the odometer, flashing the codes, one by one, and then it will flash "P DONE" when you've reached the end of the codes.

Message: Checked all the fuses. All ok.
The three-turn-get-the-code trick doesn't work with the 99's -- you have to bring it into the dealer for the $66 "analysis" reaming.
I did, however, today change the oil, PCV valve, distributor, rotor and replaced the plugs with platinum ones. CHECK ENGINE light still on, however, it runs great! Coolant ok, all hoses seem to be where they're supposed to be.
I still think it's gotta be a sensor somewhere. - Jim

Message: Its probably your gas cap sensor. Your gas cap might be loose or not holding enough pressure. My check engine light came on for that and the dealer just reset the pcm. They didn't charge me for it. Pretty stupid though.
Just my 2 cents.

Message: Find a local AutoZone- they will check the codes for you for free! I had a check engine light come on a lot, they plugged their computer into my truck and told me a bad o2 sensor.

Message: John - thanks man. I will do that.
Also, gas cap ok.
I was looking through the Haynes manual last night -- this thing has about 1,000,000 sensors, any of which will cause that CHECK ENGINE light to pop on. Again, thanks all, I'll have it checked out. - Jim

Message: OK – here’s the results of the AutoZone FREE PCM code check. I’d like to say I was in and out of this place in roughly 3 minutes – a considerable PLUS compared to the dealer who’d like you to leave it overnight, charge you and arm and a leg, etc.
The code that popped up was – P0720, “Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction.”
About 2 months ago, I had the speed sensor replaced after the ABS/BRAKE light illuminated. This one is in the rear diff. This particular sensor is located on the tranny, but I don’t have a clue where – does anyone?
I have the part - $26.49 from the “dealer.” Looks like a quick and easy fix. Screws out/in. Anyone knowing the location of this sensor would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance – Jim B.

Message: Havn't had to change mine yet, I've just been under there and seen it. Don't think it's too hard to remove/replace you can see it pretty-good,and usually if u can see it you can unplug and turn a wrech on it.

Message: You may want to give a shout to IntenseDak39 Greg had that problem. If you search the V6 board for "transmission fix" or something like that I remeber he changed the one at the rear of the tranny and he said something about just having to clean metal shavings off of it. Like I said, it was a post that he started to explain the problems a lot of guys were having. Or you can just email him.

Message: Is the sensor at the same location on a '99 5.9 Durango (4X4)? I can barely see the top of the tranny on the passenger side, let alone see a sensor. I have a Chilton's for the truck, but the only reference I see to a output speed sensor is in the codes, but I don't see any reference in the tranny section. Thanks for any help...

Message: maybe someone can figure a way to get the "auto Zone will check codes" post to come-up as a priority whenever somene does a search. You did do a search first right? LOL. I have posted that reference a few times and others have too. It is a common question here and I am sure it will be in the future. Of course I know that performing a "code" or "check engine light" search would give mucho results, so take my sarcasm as a joke, because that is all it was. But the priority post thing would be good for the future. Heck, maybe it could even be put-up as a side bar category.

| Same location on '99 5.2 2WD? IP: Logged
Message: I had exactly the same thing happen today, JimB..."check engine" light came on when I left work; I took my '99 Sport to AutoZone and got the P0720 message. I'm hoping to fix it tomorrow (assuming someone reads this tonight).
So does anybody know if that sensor is located in the same place (passenger side of tranny) on the '99 5.2L 2WD?
