Message: Ever since I got my Boyd's I've noticed what an
eyesore the calipers can be when all rusted. They
are so much more visible now. Soooo, I decided to
paint them, using red engine block paint. It
really is easy. After jacking up the truck and
taking the wheel off, I scrubbed the caliper and
used brake cleaner. I used sheets of plastic to
mask off the areas I wanted to protect. The paint
dries quite quickly, so I put about 4 coats on it.
It looks great!!! Unfortunately, the second wheel
has one stripped lug on it, so I couldn't do
both... I'm hoping to get that fixed today. I'll
post pics tonight. :)

Message: I would't suggest just using engine block paint for the rear drums though. I used regular engine block paint and most of the paint spun off into the inside of my rim. I could smell the paint cooking for the first two weeks after I painted the drums. I hear there is paint specific for drums maybe look into that if you decide to paint the them
I know you wouldn't wanna get paint all over those sweet rims!!!

Message: I've used both regular Krylon and Rustoleum spray paint on my rear drums with no problems. If the paint is coming off you need to clean the drums better,if you're losing paint due to heat I would have to think there's a problem brakes-wise.

I put new pads and drums on at the time there was no rust to take off . I put two coats on so maybe there was too much paint?

Message: If you want to do it right use true caliper paint. I got mine for JC Whitney (about $12 for 2 cans), but you can buy it from a lot of places. Painted my drums gloss black and they came out perfect. After a year they still look the same as the day they were painted.
P.S. the 2 cans is enough to paint the drums with several coats.

Message: Nope, I didn't have to take them off, just
masked really well with plastic. The plastic will
fit between the caliper and the rotor.

Message: Just thought post this. I have heard from numerous mechanics who were against any painting of calipers. Most of themr refuse to work on brakes that have painted calipers. They say that the paint holds in all the heat that is generated by the breaks and affect the calipers somehow. Just thought Id share what I heard.

Message: Lesley....I would think black would look better on a red truck, but that is my opinion.
Please let you know what you find. The issue of heat is what is keeping me from ripping my tires off this weekend and doing some painting.

Message: on my last vehicle (Volvo) I upgraded the stock rims to 16" and painted all 4 calipers red (car was silver). It looked awesome, I was one of the first cars around here to do it, now its done everywhere.
I had no issues with heat- I dont see how it would really create a problem, IMHO I think its better to paint them as it protects the caliper from corrosion. I never really worried about the heat factor.
Seen many hondas with drums painted as well- havnt heard any problems.
What color should I paint my calipers/drums on my '97? Its the same truck as Lesley's only its a Regular cab (same color).

Message: I talked to my mechanic yesterday, all of their
show hot rods have painted calipers. He said
in theory, the paint could cause some heat
retention, but (quote) "unless you drive the
snot out of it" it shouldn't cause a problem. I
went to a hot rod show on the weekend, out of
the 300 cars I saw there, I would say 70%
have painted calipers. I got the idea of red
calipers from the big show I went to in the
spring... the new porches with their 4 disc
brakes and bright red calipers just looked
soooo good.
I'll try to grab a camera today (busy busy week
at the paper, no cameras available) and post
a pic.
Here is a thread on the same topic, with pics.

Message: The heat would have to be transfered from the rotors and pads to the caliper.
You would need to be really hard on the brakes for a long time to heat up the calipers to a point of "to hot" b/c of being painted.
Just another opinion.
