Subject: 4.7 Gutless for towing ...or just mine? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 CC, 4X4 with 3.55 gears and factory towing package. It is gutless when towing my 2 trailers (20' Bass Boat and 20'Pace). It has a top end when towing of 75 MPH(125km) and fades even on small grades with the pedal to the floor. How can this be when it is supposed to have more ponies that the 5.2. My 94 SLT with a 5.2 had lots of room at the top end and I didn't have to shudder and say a prayer when I tried to pass someone. Not interested in getting a chip or doing a bunch of mods but I can't understand how Chrsyler can make those HP claims when, in my experience, it just doesn't compare to the 5.2.
Any thoughts or experience appreciated.
Cheers .... Audie, from Ontario

Message: Audie,
HP is great for leavin' yo neighbor out the hole, but for towing you need torque. There is about 100 foot pounds of torque difference in a 4.7 and a 5.2. Also if you got the stock order 3.55 rear gears ya wasn't intendin' to pull any thing. The 5.2 you had before likely had the 3.92 rears and that makes a lot of difference also.
My 4.7 5 speed w/3.92 rears tows real fine.
Have Fun,
Lynn

Message: I beg to differ. There is only a small difference in torque between the 5.2 (300lb-feet/3200 rpm) and the 4.7 (295 lb-ft/3200 rpm.) Maybe you meant the 5.9? The 4.7 is meant to be a same power replacement in a smaller displacement. The torque numbers I quoted are listed by D/C.

Message: I towed a 71 vette with a 2,000lb u-haul trailer totaling about 5300lbs, that was a b!tch. I have a 2002 4.7L CC 3.92 lsd and ALL the hp options Dodge had to offer even the 5900# gvw.
In a about 6 years or so I want to upgrade to a Ram. This truck has done everything I need it to, but I'd love to have a ram.

Message: My 94 Dak also had the lower gear ratio. Weight of trailers is 3500-4000#. I always tow with O/D disengaged.
Thanks guys ..... Audie.
