Subject: What am i doing wrong. (Waxing truck.) IP: Logged
Message: Everytime I wax anything i am left with swearl marks not the showroom finish that the wax company promises.
Its still shiny but at diffrent angles you can see patches of swearls and it looks like crap.
I have used many brands and the result is always the same.
I follow the instructions properly.
So please tell me how you do it? I am very curious because if waxing turned out this way for everyone nobody would do it.

Message: My take is you have either too much wax, or not enough rub and buff. The best light is afternoon in a partly shaded area. Don't do the whole truck first then buff because the last wax you aply will be very nasty by the time you get to it on the rub out phase. If you get a clean lint free towel on those swirls right away and rub em till your shoulder hurts they should come up nice! At least that's what works for me and I just use plain old Turtle Wax "Super Hard Shell"
Good luck hope this helps.

Message: That's why I use a random orbit polisher. It takes a lot of work to get the swearl marks out. One thing I do to make it possible to get the Dak looking perfect is to only wax the whople dak lightly then do one section each night. Really spend the time on that one area and make it perfect. In a few weeks the Dak looks like new.
A stock Dakota is great place to start

Message: Nearly ALL waxes have an amount of abrasive material added, it kinda of compounds as it waxes.
ON my 01 QC, I only use a wax that states 'it has no abrasives'. This will keep your clear coat/paint, etc. lasting longer than the abrasive ones.
If you need to buff out some blemishes, scratches, etc, then the usual waxes work well.
Currently I use 'Kit' Carnuba Wax, that states no abrasives.

Message: Make sure your truck is cool to the touch and not in direct sunlight. I use Zymol on my cab and hood and never have any problems with swirls. I am a bit lazy so the box of my truck gets McGuires(sp) spray wax. I have used NuFinish and Rain Dance,Liguid Glass,Dura Shine and Mothers Califonia Gold. On the rare ocasion that any of them have swirled or left streaks a second coat has always fixed it. Hope this helps. P.S. Do not be like those knucle heads you see driveing around with wax on their car out in direct sunlight all day!!! This will not help and is almost a sure way to leave swirls and scratches in paint from all the abrasives that the wax picks up driveing around.

Message: Sandman, can you elaborate your comment about driving out in the sun all w/ wax? I'm not sure what you mean. Thanks.

Message: Well I am guessing that you did not grow up in the city!! All of the "brothers" would wax up their cadilacs and firebirds and then drive around all day styling!!! THen as the sun would start setting they would hangout at a local car wash and start removeing the wax or they would hang out 20 or 30 cars strong at a friends house. after that wax had been backeing on there car all day long in 90++ heat they had to rub like H#LL to get it off. The wax would pick up dirt while they were driveing around. When they would buff it off the dirt in the wax would scratch the finish.Never mind the fact that the directions say to avoid direct sunlight and for all panels to be cool to the touch!!!!

Message: How are you applying wax and taking them off?
If you are applying and buffing in circular motion, it is one of the reasons why you see swirl marks at different angles, especially when the swirls are in 360 degree.
Best way is to apply it back and forth, in the direction in which the wind flow when you're driving your truck.
I know that several people apply wax using their fingers... it's because the human skin is sensitive enough to feel some abrasives (sand, objects, etc.) and you can quickly discard these when you feel it.
