Subject: A few not so well known Problems of Daks IP: Logged
Message: I just traded in my Dakota a mechanic at the dealership was going through my car, checking out the odds and ends. Well, although I thought he was nit-picking he still revealed a few things that I thought was very interesting.
First, V6 Daks, with about 70k+ on them may experience a loss in proformance, and low end pickup. This loss will be gradual so it will not be noticeable by most owners. Two things can cause this, Timing chain can be loose, which often causes a engine rattle that is deep in the compartment. And/Or Clogged Cat Converter. The mechanic said the Cat almost always gets clogged on Daks after about 80k or so, so get that thing replaced if you own a 97+ Dak with 70k+ miles on it.
Second, just a side note. The mechanic also mentioned that the Ball Joints on Daks go to hell about 60k, and that this is extremely common. This can cause a squeeking noise in the front wheel wells that does not go away with Lube'ing. This also can cause poor off road proformance.
Just thought you might find this info useful.

Message: I bet you money that they (the dealer) will put it
out on their sales lot just like it is and the
salesman will tell everyone that it's a cream puff
and just like new

Message: Those items are known TSB's with the dealerships. The cats actually have been known to fail at 30K (poor quality cats) and the timing chain problem is very common as well. Have a 2002 Ram in the shop right now with a loose (factory - 1860mile) chain (yes...I swapped it already).
The balljoints are also known for failing and at the 30-40K mile mark as well.
You can find all of the TSB's at: http://www.alldata.com

Message: So by replacing the oem parts above with aftermarket parts, we should be okay?

Message: Don't use the Mopar double roller. Get a better quality model. The Cloyes double roller chain is supposedly one of the best.

Message: Definitely use the Cloyes (or Edelbrock). Mopar has a alignment problem with their chains.

Message: Sounds like BS to me, I had a 87 3.9 had 120,000 on it when I sold it. Seen the guy awhile back he hasn't done a thing to it it has 175,000 on it. Have a 95 now with 95,000 on it and had the air fixed, and a starter.

Message: Don, It's not BS at all. I've seen bad chains on the '92+ models (including a very loose chain on a 2002 model). There is a TSB on this problem on all 3.9/5.2/5.9L Magnum engines. (Mopar adds a chain tensioner to help correct the premature chain stretch problem.)
On a side note...175K miles on the factory chain is more damaging than you may think. They do stretch and will eventually break (or jump a tooth). You'd be surprised on how much the chain stretches by the time it hits 60K miles.

Message: These TSB's, do the dealers check your truck against theses TSB's everytime it is in for service? Or just if you mention to them about the TSB's?
More or less, how do these TSB's work?
