Subject: Change your auto trans fluid! IP: Logged
Message: Be sure to change your auto transmission fluid on a regular basis. Its very cheap compared to an overhaul.
Our Caravan began shifting rough at 45,000 miles. (The Owners manuel recommends changing trans fluid at 60,000 unless you have severe driving conditions.) I took it to the Dealer and was told that the transmission had a trouble code indicating the fluid needed to be changed. However, the Service Rep said the fluid was "black" indicating the clutches, bans, etc were burnt. They had prepared an estimate of about $3000 to replace it.
I said "No thank you" and took it to the Penzoil 10 minute oil change place. They totally flushed the trans with new fluid. (The old fluid was not black or even close to it). Cost was $70 and the trans shifts like new.
Later in the afternoon, I took my Dak in and had it flushed out also (30,000 miles).
I think this is good insurance.

Message: my buddies tranny went at 37,000 miles in his 2000 Ram. the dealer said not only should he had service done at 30,000 miles but also at 15,000- due to harsh temperatures in New York State. also, if yor truck has a tow package- it is assumed that you tow. this also puts you in "harsh catagory".
price of repair $4500. ouch
keep that in mind.
