Message: Both do their job and very well. Personally, the Royal Purple made a more noticeable difference on engine noise and smoothness. (Even on my wife's '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee...with 98K+ miles on it - the engine runs much quieter and she gained a little bit over .5mpg.)

Message: Longer equipment life, optimum performance through a wide temperature range, higher efficiency, etc. ?
Find the Tech Data Sheets for each and compare.
There are four items most experts use: Viscosity Index, Noack Volatility, Four Ball Wear Test, and Total Base Number(TBN).
It's here in the TBN that quite a difference in oils can be seen. Example, a respectable mineral oil may have a TBN of 5.5 while a premium synthetic can be 11, even higher.

Message: Would there be any benefit to using Royal Purple every 3rd oil change. I use Valvoline DuraBlend now and wonder if every other, or every third oil change using Royal Purple would benefit anything or would I lose all the benefits after I drain it.

Message: Synthetic oil only helps while it is in. It does not do any good to switch back and forth. If Amsoil, Redline, or Royal Purple are too expensive then you should consider Mobile 1. Mobile 1 is about $2.00 less then these other brands. If cost is a real issue you might want to go 50/50 synthetic and regular oil. You could easily use 3 quarts of mobile regualr oil and 3 quarts of mobile one in you engine. It would offer you more bang for your buck then pre-blended oils. Most blends are only 30% synthetic and 70% regualr oil. Buy doing the 50/50 mix yourself you would increase your protection and maintain about the same cost as buy synthetic blend oil! Just make sure you use the same major brand of regular oil and synthetic oil.

Message: I would like to add my comments.
Although Red Line Oil is touted as a top-notch synthetic oil, oil analysis results show that, at least in passenger vehicle applications, it may not be formulated properly. Red Line oils are for TRUE racing applications.
On passenger vehicles (cars and trucks)it has been determined thru testing that when using Red Line there is excessive wear metal content, low tbn value, excessive oxidation percentage and Molybdenum levels which are "over range". These results would seem to indicate that after a fairly short oil drain interval the Red Line Oil used was showing unacceptable levels of oil degradation, and the Polyolester base stock seems to be reacting negatively with the aluminum and lead materials in the engine.
In addition, the "over range" Molybdenum levels indicated that Red Line may be using a solid extreme pressure additive in its oils. Although this may be useful (but is not necessary with top-quality basestocks) in RACING applications where metal components of an engine may be more likely to come in contact with each other, it is not necessary in a passenger vehicle engine and can actually be harmful to the engine. This would make sense, otherwise there would be no reason to indicate the levels of Molybdenum to be "over range".
If I were you I would choose an oil that is formulated for regular motorist driving conditions(normal passenger vehicle applications).

Message: I was trying to decide myself and found this info.
ROYAL PURPLE products are not 100% synthetic.
So why are they priced similar to a full synthetic?
(taken directly from company website)
"The Synerlec technology provides the best protection and performance increases available, however, it is very expensive. We have blended our street oils to exceed the performance characteristics of any other blended or "Full" synthetic. If having a full synthetic is important, we have our racing line which can be considered a "Full" synthetic."
qUESTIONS i ASKED MYSELF
"Blended " ????
"can be considered" a full synthetic ???
(they are selling we a load of duck doo)
MAKE SURE YOU BUY PASSENGER TRUCK 100% TRUE SYNTHETIC and I don't care what brand. NO blend, No Maybe, No "can be considered", I want real deal.

Message: IndustryXpert,
I am qurious why the lab results you site have been removed from every single Amsoil site. I read that study on an amsoil site a year ago. I clearly remember reading that the oil tested was Redline Raceing formula. Redline cautions not to use it's race formula in daily drivers.Redline does not put very many detergents in and they add alot of ep adatives. They do have API approved oils formulated just for daily drivers that are 100% synthetic. I have one more oil change worth of Mobile 1 in my basement. I am going to have to try Redlines oil and run my own oil anlysis(sp). I was going to support my local Amsoil dealer and go with the Tri-Guard system but I think I will try one oil change with Redline crank case oil first. P.S. If this study was above the board then it would be on Amsoils corperate site!!!!

What the HECK is SYNERLEC technology ?
Sounds like a "made up name" so people

cause it sure ain't synthetic.

Message: Personaly, I opted for Royal Purple rather than Redline. I am running 15W 40 in my 90 Buick Century rated for 5W 30 oil. Started driving as a work vehicle at 120,000 miles and is now at 163,000! I have ran RP for roughly 20,000 miles. I changed my normal Castrol GTX Blend with RP and ran it for 6,000 miles. Then changed and replaced with 4 more quarts of RP. Doing so at 6,000 miles allowed me to ensure there was 100% RP in there without any other leftover oil. Ran the RP for another 12,000 miles and need to change again. I put 900 miles on this car every week. I added a custom Cold air intake running dirrectly to my front grill and a Fram Air Hog. I easily notice a 15+ HP gain. Miliage and engine is consistant and greatly improved. This car was neglected for most its life and am thinking bout buying a 2000 Ford Focus with 50,000 miles for 5,000. No doubt, I will indeed add RP to this vehicle as well.
NOTE: Lucas Oil Stabilizer also rocks. But, have not tried there Synthetic type with Royal Purple..
Perhaps someone should try?
