Subject: should i do it? IP: Logged
Message: People tell me that putting proformance mods(TB,air intake, proformance exauhst) is a waste of money on a 4WD. They say none of it will help me offroad. Also, with over 102,000mi on my 93 4x4 longbed Dakota w/318ci, there are too many miles on it to make it a good proformance(i.e. power) truck? Anyone have any opinions on this? Thanks!

Message: I disagree with the statement that it won't help you off road. The torque will be improved with those modifications which can help when off road. About the mileage - what kind of shape is the engine in? Is it still clean and tight with good compression? If so, it probably has a lot of useful life left. Take it to a good mechanic (or do it yourself if you have the tools) and have the compression checked. If it's still close to original specs and all cylinders are even, it would be worth it. How long do you intend to keep the truck? My $0.02 worth

That would depend highly on the modifications themselves. Installing items such as an oversized TB (50+mm) or long tube headers...I can understand why. But most of the standard "Bolt-Ons" work very well.
What you want on a 4x4 is low end torque. A mild cleanup on the throttle body, a decent intake tube, and a good aftermarket muffler will definitely enhance overall performance and keep the powerband in a useable range. Most people who use their trucks on some nice offroad trails never really get above 2000rpm (maybe 2500rpm).
On the mileage, as travis pointed out...a compression check will give you a good indication on what condition the internals of the engine are in. Beyond that, the standard maintenance such as replacing the O2 sensor(s) after 60K miles and a good tune-up (including plug wires) will help.

Message: I have a 95 w/81000, not as many as yours, but my engine is in great shape and the mods I have made really make a difference. It is definitely worth it for the enjoyment of it.

Message: a friend of mine has a 93 CC 318. He has over 190,000 miles on it. when he had to change the timing chain, he dropped the oil pan. you could still see the marks in the side of the cylinder walls from when it was orignially honed. The reliablity of that motor is unquestionable. As far as the power, do what ever they say, i don't go off road so i'm not sure what would help, or hurt.

Message: I'm just confused about what Travis said about improved tourqe. I dont think you can "improve torque by having bolt on mods to your truck. Torque is set at the factory, and the only way to "improve" torque is to get a different differental or bigger engine or tranny. Correct me if I'm wrong guys.
