Subject: Opinions on Crate Motors? IP: Logged
Message: I was thinking about getting a 402 crate motor for my R/T, and i was wondering if anyone had a crate motor in there dak to tell me how good of motors are they? Ive heard they are really bad ass motors but not from someone that had one. And where can i get a 5 speed for them?

Message: I dont have one but I have "heard" the same thing you have. But why get the 402 ? I would go with the 360/380Hp kit. Just my 2 cents.

Message: Well the 402 puts out 435 hp and 465 ftlb of torque and only cost $4,995 so that ought to give my r/t a little bit more of a sting to it. And the 360 crate motor has 395 horses and 402 ft-lbs and cost $4,695 which would u rather do?

Message: It's going to be your decision in the end but my opinion would be to go with the 360. Why? Direct replacement, no hunting for parts, not to mention all of the modifications that you are going to have to do to mounts, crossmembers, driveshaft, etc.,the $300.00 difference in price is pocket change in comparison. I mean we're talking about a difference of 40 hp and 63 ft-lb, which is considerable, but the fact that you would have a hard enough time hooking up with 395 hp, the extra power of the big block will do you no good. I mean yeah it would be a great conversation piece at shows but the sad reality is on the street you would probably get beat by a guy with a modded out 4.7 or 5.9 because you would still be back at the line sitting in a smoke cloud. But like I said in the beginning, you can read all of our opinions, but in the end, it will be your wallet that the money will be coming from so you'll spend it how you want to. Best of luck with which ever way you go.

Message: Good point! it would save alot of trouble i was just looking at the hp LOL get a little hp crazy sometimes hehehe yea the 360 would be the better way to go in the long run. Thanks for your opinion! might have even saved me a couple of k lol

Message: The 402 is a stroked 360 magnum motor. You wouldn't have to hunt for parts and fabricate anything to put the motor in the truck. Only thing you would have to do is bump up the fuel system and strenghten your drive-line, which you would have to do even if you put the aluminum headed 360 in your truck. That's still alot of horse and torque going through the transmission and rear-end.

Message: The only Crate that is actually designed for an EFI application would be the standard 5.9l they sell (which you will already have underhood), I'm pretty sure all the other crates are designed and tuned with carbs in mind. Which means you'd have to buy an MP1 intake or reuse the good ol' beer barrel, neither of these intakes might compliment the cam and ports as well as the intakes they
'd come with.
Good sites for engine theory, are Huges Engines and one called "Panic's Mopar tech pages" lots of information to pour over so you can make an informed decission.

Message: yes, your right Magnum most mopar crates maybe all of them, the 360 crate for sure are all carburated, i dont see anything wrong with that except it'll make your R/T more of a muscle truck, but what the hell do i know im just a sixer guy who wishes i woulda bought an R/T, lol

Message: My question is how are you going to controle the fuel system. That cam would only idle with about 8 inches of vacuume. If you were to swap in a different cam it will have the idle vacuume. The you can get someone to do up a suitible fuel system.

Message: Check out Hughes Engines...they have a "re-worked" Magnum intake that they claim will work with the more "radical" camshafts.
From Hughes' web-site concerning the use of the Magnum re-worked "beer keg" with bigger cams and throttle bodies..."Filling the plenum areas with create a stronger vacuum signal to the fuel injection. The stronger signal helps to offset the signal lost to large duration camshafts and large port throttle bodies."
So as you can see they recommed the factory intakes (modified of course), over the M-1 intakes. They don't overlook the M-1s, but they understand keeping the drivability of a heavily modified "street" engine with the bigger cams and throttle bodies to an optimum.
I totally agree with Hughes' thinking. Every single plane intake I've seen has an AVERAGE operating range from 3000-7500 RPM. Now if I'm going to build a drivable "street/strip" engine, I'd rather have the operating range down near 2300-6200 RPM. This will keep the truck more friendly in normal everyday driving.
So, that will open up the possibilites for building a suitable fuel system for your 402 crate engine or the aluminum-headed 360.
I'm sure that Speedtweaks or KRC Performance will be able to help in the fuel delivery on any application.

Message: Probably nothing wrong with the reworked beer-keg but I can vouch for the street-ability of the M1 2-bbl as I just installed one along with a Hughes cam. The truck is just as responsive on the street as it ever was and my sixty foot times stayed the same while picking up 3 tenths and 3 mph in the quarter mile.

Message: I believe the 402 is supposed to be more streetable then the highest powered 360 crate. The extra cubes allow for a milder cam and more vacuume. They do not supposedly work well with the feul injection. Maybe if you put on a M1 and 24" injectors, a return style feul system, and then used the Roe racing controller it might deliver enough feul. See how people are making the 402 strokers work and apply it to the crate motor.

Message: If I were to put a 402 crate motor in a Dakota I would change the cam , put on an M1 , tear the motor down and clean everything , change to Eagle H beam rods and a set of Diamond pistons , have the crank internal balanced , have the block punched .030" and have the decks squared , ARP bolts and studs all the way through it , port the heads , stronger springs and pushrods , roller rockers , and also maybe have the block O-ringed in case I ever want to run a blower or nitrous on it. A few other things I might consider is upgrading to a forged crank , going with the 4 barrel throttle body , and a good set of custom headers 1 3/4" primarys - 32-36" primary tube length with 3" dual or 4-4.5" single exhaust.

Message: The 380HP 360 runs the M1 4bbl intake...which includes the bosses for MPI. However, the engine is too built for factory MPI. Hence, you'd have to look into a custom MPI solution in order to feed this baby.

Message: So the 402 would bolt up to the factory transmission and bellhousing and everything. I'm sure a person can get the fuel system to where it will feed good enough for that 402 pretty cheap and wouldn't have to spend too much money on getting that fixed, but i wanna a six speed for my r/t and i was wondering if they make them for any crate motors or would it have to be a all custom job and cost a chunk of gold? I found a 5 speed for the 360s but i cant find anything on a 6 speed if anyone knows where i can get one please let me know im gettin ready to order my r/t and i wanna have everything in line for when it gets here.
